Thieves in San Francisco have been caught on camera cruising the street in a Lexus before stopping at parked cars to smash the windows in and steal goods inside. The brazen thefts were seen in footage obtained by local news station KTVU on Thursday afternoon. One SUV even had a person sitting in the back when the windows were smashed, but the thief still snatched the victim's bag before escaping in the waiting Lexus. There has been nearly 10,000 thefts from vehicles in the city so far this year.

Also, if a gang of thieves descended on some store at a mall, then it should be an easy matter to lock the mall's doors and to lock the doors of most of the stores in the mall. That's likely to be very disruptive, however, and I don't know how practical that would be.

As has been pointed out this would be hazardous. And note that there's very often glass that could be broken out to escape.

Instead, how about some nets? They are on poles in front of the door. When the silent alarm is triggered for invasion a remote operator watches, if an invader is passing under a net and nobody else is too close the relevant net is triggered--the corners drop quickly under power, then the rest of it is pulled down more slowly. The net material has a metal core so knives won't cut it. You'll only get a few of the invaders this way but it doesn't take a high capture rate to discourage the behavior.

This could be countered by hostage taking--minimal risk to the hostage (there's no reason to do more than pass under the net with them) but with a major escalation of charges. I think this wouldn't be too likely.

A local council meeting in an affluent San Francisco neighborhood descended into chaos when hundreds of 'rowdy' residents began booing plans to place homeless people in a nearby hotel. Crowds of angry Millbrae residents packed out their local community hall on Friday to protest 'Project Homekey' proposals to house 100 rough sleepers at the La Quinta hotel on El Camino Real, close to the city center. So many people turned up that hundreds had to stand outside the 300-man capacity hall to hear proposals outlined by San Mateo County Executive Mike Callagy.

ATVs? That's nothing. In the little town I grew up in, it was common to see people walking down the street with a firearm in hand, or with an open container of alcohol, or driving with expired tags, or jaywalking, or hanging out in parking lots shooting the shit. If they had property, they'd go poaching for game birds down on the river, often carelessly sending bullets into roadways or adjoining properties. Most of the social life of your average Waterfordian consisted of doing things that get Black folks arrested or gunned down by the police, just 80 miles away in Oakland. This Republican rhetorical game of pretending that only Democrats commit crimes is ridiculous nonsense, and anyone who has ever lived in Republican territories for any length of time knows it. They do not live in or even try to create crimeless paradises. White people just don't see those things as crimes... when they themselves are doing them. The purpose of the government is to contain the ever present threat posed by the liberty of whatever social classes the tv tells them to hate. Not to "tell them what to do in their own town". That's "government oppression".

Violent criminals are fearless in California

The most violent and fearless criminals I've known were libertarians.

Without going too much into my checkered past, I've known more than a few. Quite a lot, really.

They didn't tend to have any particular philosophical, religious, or political leanings. They tended to go with the flow, saying anything that got them what they wanted at the moment. When I describe them as libertarians, I don't mean Libertarians. They simply don't think that laws or social norms or ethical codes apply to them. Small l libertarian.

Unfortunately for the USA, that sort of libertarianism has taken over the Republicans. That's the TeaParty wing of the GOP. American Values, rule of law, basic democratic institutions, all that stuff is for losers. People who aren't as smart as Trump and his compadres.
