Breakdown In Civil Order

People steal, get arraigned, released, and go back to rob the same store. I was enering the Walgreen;s in downtown Seattle and somebody on an E-scooter was going past the security guard with an armful of goods. The guard said he was not allowed to do anything.
“Stop! Or I’ll say ‘stop’ again!”
That is pretty much it.

Before the police began clearing the area of homeless tents on the street people would steal from a store, walk out the door, and sell it on street in plain sight.

The police follow city council policy. Citizen and business anger got to the point where the area had to be finally cleared.

Earlier in the same area the owner and his pregnant wife of a popular restaurant were shot in their car for no reason. Husband survived, wife and baby did not.

We still hear about it in the news.

The evidence based approach to reducing petty crime is:
  • Small penalties
  • Penalties that don't reduce the future ability of offenders to find lawful employment
  • High probability of detection
  • High probability of conviction for guilty suspects
  • Low probability of conviction for innocent suspects
  • Short delay between crime and trial
  • Short delay between conviction and sentencing
  • Mutual respect and trust between police and community
  • Uniform application of the law to all citizens
  • Punishments that are proportionate to the harm done by the offender
  • Equal punishment for equal crimes
That's what I like about ankle monitors -- they are a small penalty suitable for small crimes.

That's infuriating!
You think that's bad...

TEENS CHUCKLE, FATALLY MOW DOWN BICYCLIST ...

Two teens were heard laughing on a video as they deliberately plowed their car into a bicyclist in Nevada, killing the man -- a retired police chief.

The 17-year-old driver and his passenger were cruising down a street in Las Vegas on August 14, coming up behind Andreas Probst as he rode his cycle in the bike lane.
Filming with his cell phone, the passenger was chuckling with the driver as they plotted to run over Probst. You can hear them say, "Ready?" and "Yeah, hit his ass."

Moments later, the driver crashed into Probst, causing him to fly up onto the windshield before tumbling to the ground.

Another recent event.

An old woman beaten by a group of young people in a store robbery. She said they were laughing as they beat her.

What is the point of the persistence of this stories? No one disputes that they are real.

You need to develop a different hobby.

I suspect that the recurrent sharing of such stories primarily aims to heighten awareness and perhaps foster a sense of community vigilance. Unfortunately, there are individuals who may have different, less altruistic intentions, making it quite understandable to feel a sense of caution or even fatigue in response to these narratives. I share your concern and appreciate it.

Does it bother some people to have their illusion of a warm fuzzy secure life challenged?

The point is culture has taken a turn for the worse. It is not police, racism, availbi;ity of guns, or government that is the problem. It is culture across demographics.

If you are yiunger this will be playing out as you get older.

On what basis do you believe that when yiu get older tere will be safety and order, or do you just blindly go forward escaping from reality on ice cream , pizza, and Big Macs?

Ignorance is bliss.

It's in the thread.

I don't want to speak for steve, but one "big picture" take away is that violently overzealous cops aren't nearly the problem that delicately "sensitive" cops are. For most people.

Wait, I thought there was a "harm prevention" program in place;

San Francisco's overdose deaths continue to rise - soaring in August with an additional 84 deaths, 66 involving fentanyl - to become the city's deadliest month since 2021. More than 849 people are expected to die of drug overdoses in 2023, on pace to exceed the current record of 720 deaths in 2020 when substance abuse treatment programs were forced to reduce capacity or shut down during the pandemic.

Daily Mail

It's almost like some sort of a purge is going on.

There is no doubt ignorance is bliss. There is no doubt in many parts of the US, civil disorder is on the rise. There is also no doubt that history teaches anyone who pays attention that elder generation always makes the exact same complaints.

But your response does not explain this obsession with the need to continually bring new instances of “civil disorder”. The point has been made.

What culture? One could argue that this is who we've always been but now there's more information available to everyone to consume. I personally believe all this talk is just the older generation thinking of the past with an illusion of the warm fuzzy rather than remembering how it actually was.

Some of the posts I've read on this thread remind me of something I saw on the internet years ago.

A high profile, urban liberal, judge gets mugged.
He appears in the courtroom next day, brings the court to order, then makes an announcement from the bench.
"I want everyone in this courtroom to know that my personal experience yesterday will in no way impact my judgements or sentencing."

From the back of the room, an old lady yells, "MUG HIM AGAIN!"
