China Prepares for War - Our Response?

In the news the Chinese leader told Biden directly China will take Taiwan, preferably peacefully.

Biden says we will defend Taiwan. We have no defense treaty. Taiwan has no international status.

Yet agin we take sides in a civil war. Like Vietnam.

Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria all are a mess. We interfere chanting the democracy mantra and leave people worse off and suffering.

It is insane to think we are going to war with China deefnding an island off its coast.

Biden probably thinks he is a Cold War warrior planting the flag around the worl

It ain’t the island, it’s what is made there.

It is insane that we have failed to “onshore” the manufacture of chips that are essential to so many aspects of our military and civilian technologies. If we could do that, then the “loss” of Taiwan would be a non issue.

Steve: how much of your stance here is because you don’t like Biden? Put to the side for a second that Taiwan is one of our most important trading partners (Taiwan manufacturers 92 percent of the world’s chips) do you think it fair for a larger country to just conquer a smaller country? If we are ever going to escape the wave of war that we are in, we must find a way to prevent larger asshole countries from conquering smaller ones.

It is part of the slow erosion of congressional control over POTUS and war , starting with the Tonkin Gulf Resolution and the Vietnam War.

Biden has no constitutional authority to commit us to defend Taiwan.

We rail against Trump abusing power, should be no different with Biden.

Gaza has raided gas prices ad affected supply chins due to attacks on shipping.

What do you think would happen if there was an air and sea war with China in the midst of the world's business trade and shipping area? It doesn't take an economic genius to figure that out.

?? HR 2479: US shall “… provide Taiwan with arms of a defensive character and shall maintain the capacity of the us to resist forms of coercion that would jeopardize the security of Taiwan”. Signed into US law in 1980.

No, Biden is thinking the mission of the navy is to keep the shipping lanes open so commercial vessels can transit unmolested. And it is. Whether or not it is necessary to have on average a third of the US Navy fleet out to sea at any given time during peace is another matter.

Asked to clarify if he meant that unlike in Ukraine, US forces – American men and women – would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, Biden said: “Yes.”
Biden has said this before. He has no authority to make such a statement.

China's arbitrary redrawing of maritime boundaries in the South China Sea and freedom of navigation is a separate issue.

China seized Tibet ad we saw what happened in Hong Kong.

China seized Indian land for a transit route to Tibet and China and India have been shooting at each other.

An armed attack and invasion of Taiwan is not an idle threat from China.

Chnia has been harassing Phillipe fishing ships in international waters they claim. I believe we have a mutual defense agreement with the PI.

Biden and others keep thinking we ca affect Russia and China through retrorocket and sanctions and it does not work. They do not seem to grasp those countries have their own culture and history that is not western. Biden looks like a fool when he 'asks' Israel to avoid civilian casualties. Netanyahu does not give a shit what is said as long s he gets weapons.

Same with China. They don't care what we say they should do.

I doubt the average Chinese citizen wants to hear us telling them what to do any more then we want others telling us what to do.

From repers Biden is losing support from blacks. I've herd it in our local news. What are we doing spending all this money abroad while we have issues with food security, housing, education, and health care over here.

On that I strongly agree.

Steve: you don't like Biden. We get it! But you are incorrect when you say that Biden shouldn't be supporting Taiwan. Please read:

If food security, housing, education, and health care are your concerns, then spendng money abroad seems like a misguided target for your ire, when there are tax cuts for the wealthy that reduce the amount available for those things far more, while doing far less to further your nation's interests.

If you don't trot out that line when tax cuts are proposed, then it seems likely that food security, housing, education, and health care are NOT your concerns, but that you hope they'll make an effective appeal to emotion, to support your isolationism without your needing to defend it rationally or logically.

China's Water Rockets

Missiles filled with water instead of fuel and lids on silos that do not work properly were among the factors that led to the sacking of China's defense minister and a slew of other senior officials last year, according to a recent report. These issues, blamed primarily on corruption, have in turn reportedly rattled Chinese President Xi Jinping's confidence in his country's armed forces, including its ability to conduct major operations, such as an invasion of Taiwan. It also raises questions about the readiness of China's military and its broader modernization efforts.
More corruption in another authoritarian regime.
Feigned nationalism. A once in a lifetime opportunity to enrich yourself. Perhaps, when showing positive results at least on paper has serious implications not just your career but your wellbeing. I don't know. Maybe it's a little of everything.

It has always been this way in corrupt military hierarchies with insufficient accountability, particularly after a long period of peace.

In WWII, Italian troops in North Africa routinely opened crates of rations to find just one layer of ration tins, with the rest of the crate filled with sand.

In the 18th century, the Royal Navy lost a number of ships due to the theft of copper hull bolts; The corrupt dockyard workers would cut the head and tail off every second or third bolt, and then hammer these into each end of the hole they were meant to pass through; A visual inspection would find nothing amiss, and the ships would sail perfectly well in calm weather - but broke up as soon as they encountered heavy seas. The shafts of the bolts were then sold back to the navy as scrap copper.

In the Crimean War, and again in the Boer War, the British Army lost a sizable fraction of food, tents, uniforms and boots, to pillage - Every time a crate changed hands, a few percent of the contents would be stolen, so that often less than one in ten of the things dispatched from England actually reached the front.

Rocket fuel is typically kerosene; It's easy to sell and desirable to steal - and as long as nobody tries to fire the rockets, who will notice that the tanks actually contain water? Particularly if the guy who is meant to check is taking a cut of the profits.

Russia sent a rocket up to the ISS--which turned out to not have any supplies in it.

Taiwan’s election result is a triumph for democracy – and a thorn in Beijing’s side | Michelle Kuo | The Guardian
DPP = Democratic Progressive Party
TPP = Taiwan People's Party
KMT = Kuomintang
In 1996, the first year that Taiwan held presidential elections, it would have been unthinkable that this party of subversives and underdogs would become the political establishment. Its members were freedom fighters who founded the DPP under martial law in 1986, and were frequently arrested on charges of sedition or subversion. In prison, they read Nelson Mandela and penned manifestos calling for free and fair elections. After Taiwan ended martial law in 1987, these formerly incarcerated activists ran for office across Taiwan – and won.

In a world gone mad, Taiwan’s story is indisputably, heartbreakingly hopeful. According to the nonprofit Freedom House, Taiwan is the sixth most free country in the world – above France and the US. It has legalised same-sex marriage, making it a haven for queer people across Asia. It boasts one of the highest rates of female participation in the legislature. It has universal healthcare and affordable public transport. The DPP holds on to a vision of Taiwan that is genuinely multicultural and multilingual. This is a giant thorn in Beijing’s side, because Taiwan shows that democracy works. One of the Chinese Communist party’s central claims is that democracy is incompatible with Chinese-speaking societies. But Taiwan’s very existence undermines that claim.
Then noting that the DPP would not have won if the TPP and KMT had allied with each other.
Its greatest failure in the past eight years has been its inability to address the malaise shared by young people in Taiwan: long working hours, low pay, unaffordable housing, poor protection for renters, and a growing gulf between the mega-rich and everybody else.

...
“Taiwan in Asia is a revolutionary country,” he said. “It’s very rebellious.” That rebellious history is forged through its links to social movements, whose victories will seem astonishing, no matter where you’re from.
Taiwan election: global leaders draw Beijing’s ire for congratulating new president | Taiwan | The Guardian - "China urges US, UK and Japan not to interfere in ‘China’s internal affairs’ after they congratulate Lai Ching-te for election win"

Still this one-China conceit. Why won't they give it up?

It's very sad that they "won't give it up". I think that it's very similar to Russia/Ukraine, in that they think that that Taiwan belongs to them.
