Covid-19 miscellany

Here's how crazy wrong the anti-vax Trumpers are -- by death totals:
WWI American military death total: 117,000 Time span: roughly a year and a half
WWII American military death total: 405,000 Time span: four and a half years
Civil War American military death total: 665,000 Time span: four years
Covid -- U.S. death total, to date: 701,000 Time span: 20 months to date

So, in attempting to contain, stem, and stamp out this catastrophe, which is now worse than our worst war, which is usually pictured as a devastating slaughter that bled the country white, our government is accused of overreaction, overreach, and coercion. It's just plain crazy, ignorant, and unpatriotic. It's thumb-sucking. All you have to do, to find a recent contrasting example presided over by a conservative administration, is look at 9/11/01, in which we lost 2977 lives in one day and then submitted to fairly stringent restrictions on travel and a bumped-up security state -- plus two wars. But you can't expect a huge chunk of our citizens to get inoculated so that this epidemic can finally be controlled and eradicated.
We didn't have to lose this many lives. New Zealanders didn't, and they don't have a dictatorship. They just have the common sense and regard for the general welfare to realize that emergencies require extraordinary practice.

Put another way, in The US, Covid causes a 9/11 level of deaths every 2 days.
If Covid lasts as long in the US was in WWII, we will lose almost 3 times as may people as the US lost in WWII.
Covid on average causes almost 3X more deaths per day as did WWII for the US
The US went to war over about 2400 deaths at pearl harbor. The pandemic has caused almost 300 Pearl Harbors since it started

And half of US citizens are working to keep that level of death continuing.

On average, in the US the Flu kills around 15-20K people a year. Compare that to 700,000 in a year and a half of Covid.

And that’s *WITH* measures like lock downs, masks, and social distancing. One wonders what the numbers would be if we did as much as we do for the flu, which is nothing.

Also, I believe that I read that most of the flu deaths are among the unvaccinated.

Rep. Katie Porter on Twitter: "Representatives have a duty to get answers for the American people. ..." / Twitter
Representatives have a duty to get answers for the American people. At my and @RepRoKhanna's request, my colleagues and I were recently briefed by Dr. Peter Marks, @US_FDA’s vaccine chief, on when kids under 12 will be able to get vaccinated. THREAD on what we learned ⬇️

First, a disclaimer: We can't rush the science, but we can be communicating better about the vaccine approval process. My colleagues and I wrote to the @US_FDA last month to get clear information on behalf of parents of kids under 12. (2/9)

With kids going back to school and cases surging, we need to know when children under 12 will be able to get vaccinated. Today, @RepRoKhanna and I led 106 colleagues on both sides of the aisle in asking @US_FDA for answers.

My daughter is 9. This is personal.
(link to image files of KP's letter to the FDA)

Let's start with what's on everyone's minds. What's the anticipated timeline for:
✅Fast-tracked authorization for kids under 5? Spring 2022
✅Fast-tracked authorization for kids 5-12? Before Thanksgiving, possibly before Halloween
✅Full approval for kids 12-15? Fall 2021 (3/9)

As a mom of a 9 year old myself, I had a few questions for Dr. Marks—like, where will vaccines for young kids be administered once they're approved?

Answer: From their pediatrician or other approved health care workers, depending on the state. (4/9)

t's possible for pre-teens to weigh as much as adults who are eligible for the vaccine. So, I also asked how height and weight factor in. The response? Kids have more reactive immune systems than similarly-sized adults, so weight-based dosing isn't the most accurate. (5/9)

My colleague @USRepKCastor asked about the safety of kids getting both the COVID and flu vaccines. Dr. Marks said there's no reason to worry about getting both vaccines. In fact, @US_FDA is working on combining them into a single shot 💉 (6/9)
(Rep. Kathy Castor, D-FL)

The @US_FDA recently added more kids to the current vaccine trials for ages 5-12. @RepRoKhanna wanted to know why, and Dr. Marks assured us that their goal is to have as much safety data as possible. As someone who likes to crunch numbers, I can appreciate this! 🤓 (7/9)

I'm grateful the @US_FDA briefed my colleagues and me, but the agency shouldn't have left parents in the dark for months. Public health officials need to build trust with the people they serve, and that starts with being transparent. (8/9)

Rep. Katie Porter on Twitter: "Vaccines are the best tool that we have for ending this pandemic. Every American who qualifies for a vaccine should get one.

My sons, Luke and Paul, got their vaccines back in May. Watch how easy it was 👇 (9/9)
noting from May 20,
Rep. Katie Porter on Twitter: "Kids ages 12+, get in the minivan—we're getting vaccinated

Last week, I took my sons to get their first doses of the Pfizer vaccine. We went to @EdwardsLifesci's clinic, which runs from 11 AM-7 PM every Wednesday through Friday and 9 AM-5 PM on Saturdays. No appointment needed. (link)" / Twitter

I like this response:
"Habitable Earth Enthusiast" Doyle Canning on Twitter: "
What do we want? THE KIDS VACCINE!
When do we want it?
…before Halloween would be great!!
" / Twitter

Do remind us of the COVID fatality rate for children.

Less than 500 according to the CDC.
and at most 12 have died after getting a vaccine. If their deaths were even causally connected to the vaccine.

Typhoid Mary only died once - and not even of the disease, which never caused her any symptoms. She was even able to keep working throughout years of being infected.

Clearly she caused no problems whatsoever.

Excuse me? (See bit that I bolded and enlarged.) Do you even know any details of what Mengele actually did?

Right there, with that obviously absurd, hyperbolic comparison, is true hysteria.

The experiment she's asking for would require people to forego safety equipment in the face of a potentially lethal disease. Just because it's not as lethal as what Mengele did doesn't make it morally any better.

You only do stuff like this with diseases for which your research subjects are at basically zero risk of worse than just an unpleasant time. (Say, healthy young adults with the common cold or flu.)

The guy with the vax hesitant daughter's boyfriend.

Does the boyfriend have health insurance?

If not, why not put $10,000 in notarized escrow to pay bills for his very unlikely severe vaccine side effects?

If no side effects you would be only out the notary fee.

Earth to repoman:

It wasn't about the boyfriend. It was about the risk to his not-yet-able-to-be-vaccinated wife.

And the financial risk to the boyfriend from rare side effects? Doesn't matter?

You gotta give to get.

The risks of vaccine side effects is far less than the risk of the virus.

Exactly... just like the Boeing 737-Max. The changes weren't that significant. What is the danger? That is the question that has led to lots of suffering. Remember Flint, MI? The water was too corrosive. But was it safe to drink, except that wasn't the only issue. What is the danger?
Well, I'm not an expert on the 737-max, but afaik, there was a significant change in the way the plane was programmed to react.
Funny, I don't recall you complaining about that before the crashes.

People didn't make an issue of it because they didn't know what Boeing had done.

That's true. But there's another point. Is boyfriend willing to put up a similar bond in case Mrs CF gets infected?
Willing and able?

This pretty much says it all.

I get: "Video unavailable.

The uploader has not made this video available in your country":
Interesting, it is available in Russia but not in Argentina.

Do you think that that depends on the uploader, or some other reason?
It would be odd that they specifically wanted to make it available in Russia and not in Argentina. Maybe it's the default for youtube?

Read the entire thread. It's horrifying.

So much for the idea that the anti-vaxxers have only themselves to hurt.

I would be totally ok if the doctors chose that it was more ethical to use their resources on her father than on some anti-vaxxer. Why are hospitals using a "first-come, first-served" process here. In a triage situation they are allowed to make ethical decisions about who best to treat. I guess it just can't be based on some kind of "political" bias, which unfortunately vaccination status has become.

I would guess there's some licensing issue with making it available in Argentina--some local affiliate has the rights to distribute it there. When you see commercial stuff blocked in certain countries for no obvious reason your first suspect should be licenses.

Why are hospitals using a "first-come, first-served" process here.

Well, you cannot refuse to provide treatment if you have the resources available, it's unethical.
And you cannot turf someone out of a bed once you start treatment, unless they walk out or die.
So, first come, have to serve.
Unless they write up some Do Not Resuscitate papers that have "DO NOT VACCINATE" in big letters, top and bottom, and get the covidiots to sign them on the way in....
