Here's how crazy wrong the anti-vax Trumpers are -- by death totals:
WWI American military death total: 117,000 Time span: roughly a year and a half
WWII American military death total: 405,000 Time span: four and a half years
Civil War American military death total: 665,000 Time span: four years
Covid -- U.S. death total, to date: 701,000 Time span: 20 months to date
So, in attempting to contain, stem, and stamp out this catastrophe, which is now worse than our worst war, which is usually pictured as a devastating slaughter that bled the country white, our government is accused of overreaction, overreach, and coercion. It's just plain crazy, ignorant, and unpatriotic. It's thumb-sucking. All you have to do, to find a recent contrasting example presided over by a conservative administration, is look at 9/11/01, in which we lost 2977 lives in one day and then submitted to fairly stringent restrictions on travel and a bumped-up security state -- plus two wars. But you can't expect a huge chunk of our citizens to get inoculated so that this epidemic can finally be controlled and eradicated.
We didn't have to lose this many lives. New Zealanders didn't, and they don't have a dictatorship. They just have the common sense and regard for the general welfare to realize that emergencies require extraordinary practice.
Put another way, in The US, Covid causes a 9/11 level of deaths every 2 days.
If Covid lasts as long in the US was in WWII, we will lose almost 3 times as may people as the US lost in WWII.
Covid on average causes almost 3X more deaths per day as did WWII for the US
The US went to war over about 2400 deaths at pearl harbor. The pandemic has caused almost 300 Pearl Harbors since it started
And half of US citizens are working to keep that level of death continuing.
On average, in the US the Flu kills around 15-20K people a year. Compare that to 700,000 in a year and a half of Covid.
