Disagree with Walz. Fine gov and probably make a good vp. But minn is likely to stay blue. Need PA. Or at least AZ. Plus Kelly is a navy vet and a former astronaut. I really think he could bring a lot to the ticket. Might help in Georgia and other places even PA.

But I hear he’s not good at debates. Does he just need to practice? What’s so bad about his debate skills?

It is speculated that Walz can help in places like Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, all of which are borderline and all of which are badly needed.

I mentioned it earlier, but I watched his last debate in his Senate debate. It was on our local PBS station here in Arizona.

He was stiff. He had his talking points and prepared answers well-rehearsed, but when his opponent turned to address him directly and throw something unexpected at him, Kelly struggled to improvise. He seemed to fall back on his fighter pilot/astronaut training and tried to "work the problem" rather than riffing on what he'd been given. It's an imperfect analogy, but it's a bit like doing stand-up...which I've done. You've got your set worked out, have rehearsed it to death, know where you want the punchlines to land, but if it's not working, you've gotta be able to read the room and figure out how to bring the audience back to your side when they stare blankly at a joke you thought would kill.

I think Mark Kelly is doing a great job as our junior Senator, but I wonder how he'd perform in a debate against the very slick (if abhorrent) JD Vance. I'd love it if Kelly would say something like "oh, your running mate got clipped by a round? My wife got shot in the face by an assassin. You wanna talk to me about gun policy, son?"

I don't think that would happen.

I'd be disappointed if Buttigieg were picked. He's wickedly smart and would be a great VP. However, it would be a vanity pick for Harris. Someone who won't outshine her. But I think that she needs someone who helps deliever the guys on the fence, someone who challanges her. She's needs someone who can deliver tough states (Sharpiao or Kelly). Kelly would also help with her with the joe-6 pack guys (white guys). Kelly also really helps some of her weaknesses (the border). But Sharpio and/or Kelly would be great Presidents in the future also.

Reuters is reporting that Harris is set to tour battleground states with her VP candidate next week.

The short list is down to Beshear, Shapiro, Kelly, Walz, and Buttigieg.

I saw some clips of Shapiro speaking at an event alongside Gretchen Whitmer, and he did well. Got the friendly crowd riled up, and has a good stage presence. Buttigieg absolutely crushed in on The Daily Show, and took a Fox News host to the woodshed over the weekend, but (the gay thing aside) he's another Biden administration member. He's great, but doesn't balance out the ticket. I saw part of a Sunday Morning TV appearance by Walz that fell kinda flat IMO. Finally got around to watching a bit of Beshear, because I heard great things, and...I dunno. He seems like a talking point machine. A little too rehearsed. If Kelly is seriously going after the job, he must be doing it behind the scenes.

I guess we'll find out this weekend.

Interesting that Beshear is not on that list. I don’t see what Walz brings to the ticket in terms of electoral heft, though he may be a fine man who’d make a fine president.

Walz has been spineless during the 2020 George Floyd insurrection that centered in Minnesota.
He also allowed a child murderer to get out of prison early just because of pressure by extremists.

As I’ve mentioned, I’d be very surprised if Whitmer is chosen. Of that list, I think Kelly is the best in terms of what he adds to the ticket, and he also sounds like the sort of human being who would be a fine president. He’s the anti-Trump.

I have heard he was a poor debater. KH needs somebody who can hold their own against Vance.

Hold their own against…,Vance? Who has close to zero personal charisma? He writes well but he gaffs a lot.

Re: Tim Walz being ‘soft’ on a child murderer. Walz was part of a three person panel who granted release for a man who was convicted as a 16 year old minor of firing a shot that killed an 11 year old girl in what was supposedly a gang related shooting. He’s always maintained his innocence. He’s served more years than he was alive at the time of the shooting. The child’s death is a terrible tragedy. But I think it’s a different kind of tragedy to lock away for life almost any teenager.

I’m not super keen on Walz as POTUS or VP. He’s very much a politician. Which dues not mean that he does not make good decisions. I’m just saying that is my impression of him as a person,
