Also middle class, although just barely hanging onto it, and progressively liberal. And I don't know what kind of people you've run into. But if you agree with what Politesse said:
I find that kind of generalization very offensive. Maybe you mean the religious ones. The atheists and humanists I know of only want minorities to be treated fairly. And if you don't want to take advantage of the social programs they promote you're fine to go it on your own. I think it's better for everyone when those programs are available when people really need them no matter what your ancestry, gender, religious belief, or sexual preference. We celibrate diversity. Perhaps it comes across as smugness, I don't know how it appears to you. But that really is what differentiates us from the Republicans these days.
I live in the upper midwest.
There are a lot of racists here.
Not the kind of racists that would lynch a black person for registering to vote.
Just the kind that has internalized it so much that they throw out the welcome mat for Somalis---and say very nasty things about their coworkers who are US born and black and whose grandparents are also black and born in the US while congratulating themselves over how liberal they are to welcome those very black Somalis. And how much they've grown since being disgustingly racists towards the immigrants from SE Asia 20-30 years ago. Oh, they're still racist towards them, but much more polite and more subtle about it. And ignore how racist they are towards Native Americans and Hispanics.
Look at the educational disparities between .white students and students of color in say, Minnesota or Wisconsin or Iowa.
So, yeah, I would agree with Politesse, having been a northerner all my life.
