F-Head wants to buy Greenland

After the US buys Greenland from Denmark, maybe the US can sell California to Mexico.

You mean Alta California? They already own the other half.

If so, please, please sell California back to Mexico. We would be running the place within months.

Make America great again

No way. Texas fought for its independence from Mexico fair and square. California was seized during the fight over which river was the southern border of Texas.

Instead of that, can we give those Confederate states another chance to pull out? Addition by subtraction on a massive scale.

The Rio Grande doesn't flow anywhere near California. By the end of the war, we had already declared independence from Mexico successfully, and petitioned the US for annexation and military support. The territory was included in Guadalupe-Hidalgo as a supposed concession, the Mexican negotiators realizing that as there was little chance of reclaiming it, "selling" it was a win-win that might and did result in their at least keeping Baja California and the strip of seaway in between. They were also hoping (also correctly) that accepting California as a non-slave territory south of the Mason-Dixon line would help further inflame internal tensions in the US and lead to an advantageous conflict, and possibly the recovery of all of the lost territory (not so lucky on that one; as ill fate would have it they were fighting their own civil war by the time ours erupted).

Whoever drew that map in your post included some very optimistic boundaries of the Mexican State; neither Spain nor Mexico ever controlled that much territory in the northern sector, almost none of it had been surveyed north of Santa Fe and Vallejo, and Mexico's claims to most of that were never recognized by any international party. At the time of the Mexican War, most of the Great Basin and Plateau were still self-governing and had only met a handful of Europeans over the years. The Utes had more contact with Spain, but were cunning in diplomacy and war, and hadn't conceded an inch to either of the Hispanic states.

Texas had nothing to do with it except for temporal convenience and the fact that both rebellions came to be seen post-facto as fronts in the same war between the fledgling democracies of US and Mexico.

He isn't the first president to try to buy Greenland. Truman made made an offer.

That well-known stable genius Harry Truman...

I imagine they are considering similar facts. Trump is, for whatever reason, preparing for a world war with no allies.

Truman offered to buy the island when the US wes negotiating to put a military base there. Denmark instead went a differant way and helped create NATO.

Denmark Offers to Buy U.S.

COPENHAGEN (The Borowitz Report)—After rebuffing Donald J. Trump’s hypothetical proposal to purchase Greenland, the government of Denmark has announced that it would be interested in buying the United States instead.

“As we have stated, Greenland is not for sale,” a spokesperson for the Danish government said on Friday. “We have noted, however, that during the Trump regime, pretty much everything in the United States, including its government, has most definitely been for sale.”

Proposed United States purchase of Greenland -
In 1867, United States Secretary of State William H. Seward who had, the same year, negotiated the purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire considered the idea of United States annexation of both Greenland and Iceland an idea "worthy of serious consideration".[6] Under Seward's orders, a report (A Report on the Resources of Iceland and Greenland, Peirce 1868) was commissioned on the subject, but no offer ultimately made.

Buy? Buy? That’s entirely too presidential!

Genghis khan would chuckle at such a notion.

Good point. Ol' GK would exact a fair price for taking it off their hands.
Maybe nuke Copenhagen and call it a done deal.

While it is understandable why it would make sense for the USA to acquire Greenland, it is not going to happen. One would hope that after being rebuffed by Denmark and Greenland, the USA would work to foster a closer and more mutually beneficial relationship with Denmark and Greenland. Practically speaking, that means waiting until there is a replacement POTUS.

Trump wants to buy so he won't have to talk to them. It's a rich boy's solution to everything.

GK believed in meritocracy and religious tolerance and plurality, recruited into his empire regardless of race, religion or culture. Trump could learn a few things from GK.

In 1946, the U.S. government (under DEMOCRAT Truman) tried to buy Greenland for $100 million. Denmark said no.

Guess that 1946 government with a Democratic President was just as wacky and insane as Trump! Wow!
