How should west respond to potential (likely) Russian invasion of Ukraine?

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine may be outgunned, but in the latest sign it is not yet outfoxed, a fleet of decoys resembling advanced U.S. rocket systems has tricked Russian forces into wasting expensive long-range cruise missiles on dummy targets, according to interviews with senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials and photographs of the replicas reviewed by The Washington Post.
That explains why Russia hit that lumber yard a while back... probably thought it was a HIMARS factory. :ROFLMAO:

Western media are so full of shit, it's mind boggling.
They are covering old lies with new ones hoping this does not end badly for them personally. After all, they have reputation - free press and shit.
Yeah... which is why Russia took over the Ukraine capital several months ago... instead of their progress looking much like WWI progress, ie stalled?

You keep bitching about West lies, but the Russian claims of doing great, over-running Ukraine, this thing being over very shortly have been as exposed for BS like Mike Lindell's claims about Trump becoming reinstated as the President again. Russia lost their ship in the Black Sea, and shit hasn't improved since.

Russia appears to continue the fight with one arm tied behind their back... but as time passes, it really makes one wonder if they aren't just one armed.

Ukraine appears to be Russia's version of the US's Iraq. Undersized and unprepared for occupation. But at least the US got to the occupation part, their shock and awe campaign actually worked.

Nah! The U.S. (and allied) invasion was a masterpiece that gutted Saddam's army in days. It was occupationa after that which was problematic. Putie's shock and awe was a bust. And occupation of Ukraine is going to be a real bitch.

Russia can nail the occupation much better than American-led coalition ever could, because they can be more ruthless, and they can alter the demographics with forced population transfers. Old formula that goes back to the Russian empire.

One wonders when Russia will be so weakened by Putler’s vanity war, that it becomes a peach irresistibly ripe for the picking by China or some other power.

The Iraq army was less than motivated.

General Shinseki got fired by Rumsfeld when he said he did not have enough troops for post war occupation.

The only danger was if Iraq attacked SA before we were ready

Post war Schwarzkopf said he manipulated the reporters to make it seem like there were more troops on the ground then there was. He chose where to embed reporters.

Rumsfeld said 'You go to war with what you have not what you need'. And of course the infamous picture of GWB on a carrier with a banner in the background that said 'Mission Accomplished'.

The neo cons thought invading Iraq would be like liberating France in WWII.

The other day I was in a park and there was an apple tree with nice big crab apples on it, a gorgeous color and they tasted nice and tart. Well, not they, really. I could only find a single apple that hadn't been ruined by mites.

Russia is like that: they live in a barren land that they have already viciously raped for it's resources over the course of two world wars and a cold war.

All they have left is oil, and the world is quickly moving towards a post-oil industrial infrastructure.

The peach, as it were, has been infected. It would be more trouble than it's worth just finding a tiny little morsel on that diseased tree.

Best to just leave it be and occasionally spray it with pesticides to keep it's fruit mites from tainting the rest of the orchard.

Another Oligarch who expressed sympathy for Ukraine fell out of a window and was killed. Again, nothing mysterious about these unusual deaths among Putin's detractors.

Move along.

I can't help but think that of all of the Russian oligarchs get killed off, there's going to be nobody left to actually run the day-to-day, not even as kleptocrats.

The Pentagon is saying that Russians are in retreat in some places.

Pentagon ‘aware in some cases’ of Russians ‘falling back’ in southern Ukraine

In previous "counter-attacks" Russians sometimes withdrew temporarily from some villages, and when Ukrainian troops moved in they got pounded with artillery. There's too much noise from both sides to tell what's actually going on, but Ukraine doesn't have a very good track record at conducting offensive operations.

It appers for dictators no amount of power and wealth is enough. If Hilter has stood pat after his inital success in Europe leaving Russia and thje Brits alone it would be a different world today.

Putin could have sat back enjoying his wealth and his power over the Russian Federation. I think like China Putin has an inferiority complex. A need to be en as a peer to the USA and the west. Becoming part of western world order is not an option.

China is doing the same as Russia. Tibet was seized on the retxt of an ancient claim. Taiwan obviously. They made a claim to Okinawa. Redrawing international maritime boundaries and unilateral declaringa right to control passage over and on the water. China siezed a pice of India and there was short shooting war.

Some of us quetion our military posture but the world remains an unstable dangerous place.

Stalin eliminated the educated middle class who could have made the economy work. Result economc failure and famines.

Chines communist eliminated the same in the Cultural Revolution. Result economic failure and famine.

There might be something to this "counter-attack":

Not convinced yet if Ukraine can keep it up. There are some bad signals also. But it looks like Ukraine is doing some things right: using drones, destroying radars, using their own counter-battery radars, rotating fresh troops to the front line, etc.

EDIT: Apparently this was about Donetsk front and not Kherson. But it's still good news, if Russians are feeling the pain. Putin just yesterday allegedly extended the deadline to capture Donetsk from end of August to mid-September, which sounds pretty unrealistic, considering the slow pace near Donetsk city and practical standstill near Sloviansk.

To be fair, "mid-September" sounds less unrealistic than "end of August", when you are looking at the situation on September 1st...

I think it is pretty easy to tell that it is near a stalemate. Ukraine isn't getting much of anything back and while Russia is inflicting a good deal of harm, they appear to be making virtually no progress from it. It took Russia years to establish this foothold in the east, not months... and we are seeing that Russia lacks the will (potentially the ability) to make a real war of this. The US learned in Iraq (we did learn this right?), planes and missiles help but troops are a prerequisite to hold territory, a lot of them. Expecting the people or insurgents you are fighting to just "give up" (Russia's presumed plan) isn't a viable strategy.

Disagree--China didn't eliminate them so much as send them to the countryside.
