That's Louis de Funes from a movie called "Le Corniaud"(1965) :D

It seems we have this conversation about humour every couple of years.

To me, that is riffing off a number of stereotypes, but isn't denigrating anyone.

When I encounter this style it seems to me that it is acknowledging the stereotype and POINTING OUT that there is more to people, and doing it with a chuckle.

But I have been informed I am wrong about this before.

I tend to agree with this, but a lot depends on the attitude and culture of the person telling the joke; it is the sort of joke I would hesitate to tell to an audience who didn't know me well (or who I didn't know well), lest they misunderstood the intent.

I am certainly not surprised at Davka's response, and suspect that in his community, the probability of such a joke being made with explicitly racist intent is perhaps higher than it would be in ours; As such it is more offensive in the US (particularly the South) than it is in Australia. I could envisage some redneck telling this as part of a pattern of truly offensive racist statements; equally I could see someone like Sanjeev Bhaskar telling the joke as self-deprecating comedy about his own culture.

The former I would consider deeply offensive; the latter hilarious.

If you haven't seen the sketch comedy Goodness Gracious Me!, which is a sketch comedy essentially based on the experiences of British families of Indian ancestry, you have seriously missed out.
