January 6 Hearings Live

Senator Ron Johnson lies for Trump

Yes, the slow coup is continuing. Expect it to start up again in 2024 to early 2025. Romney just said that Trump could easily win the 2024 nomination in a landslide. My hope is that he punts due to age. We should be fully prepared for another coup attempt.

Yup. Any time any Republican loses any election anywhere, it is now SOP to contest it in court, and if unsuccessful there, visit violence upon anyone and everyone who is part of the electoral process. This will continue until they get their totalitarian government, or lots of Republican candidates and their flunkies are imprisoned.

I still have hope that principled conservative Republicans, like Romney, can pull the GOP out of the weeds.

But it will probably look like that rock climbing dude who had to cut off his own arm to get down off the rock face and survive.

Like Romney? As in only Romney?

Portman, Collins, Murkowski, etc... haven't put much of a road block.

I don't think that a guy with a dressage horse and a car elevator will connect with Trump supporters.

This isn't very clear.

So, I'll ask. Do Trump supporters connect with politicians who flaunt their wealth?

They connect with alpha bullies. If Mitt Romney started talking like Trump, he'd become admired by the Red Hats.
Like Romney? As in only Romney?

Let me know when you understand the difference between an example and a comprehensive list, OK?
Tom
As in, who else? It took an insurrection to get a small handful of Republicans to vote to convict. Romney was the only Republican to convict when Trump held up Ukrainian funding to get a fake investigation announced against Biden. Had Trump succeeded, he probably would have won the election. There are no principled Republicans anymore. Just different versions of partisan and hyper-partisan.

I think the "principled conservatives will save the day" ship sailed a long time ago.

This rightward tack is not something that just suddenly appeared with Trump. No, the purge of moderates in the GOP has been going on for at least a decade. Probably longer. They had the "Freedom Caucus" and the "Tea Party Caucus" and the definition of what a "principled conservative" has now degraded to the point where Liz "My Dad Is Real Life Darth Vader" Cheney is considered to be moderate and level-headed. Her state's GOP has subsequently told her she's persona non grata.

Here in AZ, the state Republican party censured Governor Ducey - a Trump supporting, textbook right wing conservative - because when push came to shove he literally hung up on Trump during the vote certification. Then there's Mike Pence. If you ever wanted an example of how far down the rabbit hole they've gone, Pence is it. He's uptight, white, uber-evangelically Christian, virulently homophobic, and a Trump sycophant right up until the first week in January. Then he chose to follow the Constitutionally mandated job he held, and the Trump mob turned on him and actually wanted to murder him for his "transgression."

A decade ago, Pence was a rising star in the party. Now he needs extra security. They're not just purging moderates, but anyone who dares to go against Trump. Cancun Cruz figured this out, and it's working for him. Trump insulted him, insulted his wife, and he said "thank you sir, may I have another." Now, despite the fact that he bailed on his own state during it's worst crisis in decades and became a punching bag in the media, he's still good with the MAGA crowd because his support for Trump hasn't wavered.

While I disagree Pence was a rising star, the right-wing is definitely purging now. Reagan Republicans today are "RINO's".

And Joe Biden is a socialist.

"I like anybody who doesn't like anyone that I don't like. Add a veneer of success and I'll really admire you. And if you say stuff out loud that I don't have the courage to say myself, I'll follow you anywhere."

A decade ago, Pence was a rising star in the party.

I live in Pence's old stomping grounds.

A decade ago, he was a rising star. But 5 years ago he was crashing and burning. Then Trump picked him out of the bottom of the TeaParty barrel. Because Trump was also crashing and burning.

Trump couldn't get any traction with a crucial Republican base, evangelical Christians. He desperately needed it. Pence had it, but he'd screwed over the local Christians. He was gonna lose the gubernatorial election.

So, Trump picked Pence as VP. It worked, as a political ploy. Trump squirmed their way into the White House. Because millions of low information Christians voted for Trump/Pence, which isn't the same as voting for Trump.

They're both popular, but not amongst the same voter base. I don't think either will win an election without the other. And Trump ordered the lynching of Pence while Pence was presiding over Trump's loss of the 2020 election.

Trump Cruz in 2024

Trump Cruz in 2024
This brings up an interesting point. If Trump runs in 2024 what will the primary be like? If he really has a strangle hold on the party who wants to run against him? Who will stand up and say that they don’t think Trump should be President, they should? And if that person loses to Trump in the primary you think Trump would pick that person for VP? So, the only way to be VP would be to not run. Would Cruz pass up a chance to run for President?

Couldn't the Park Service just requisition, say, 200 statues of Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, Jeff Davis, and generous helpings of Nathan Bedford Forrest, and ring the Capitol with 'em? Forewarned = forearmed.

Romney/McCain. "We're the party's last chance!"
Would Cruz pass up a chance to run for President?
He'd have to. If he even begins a run, Trump will tell his people that Cruz is a traitor. Anyone who doesn't endorse Trump's candidacy is The Other, a secret socialist, a Democrat trying to split the Republican vote, to help the Harris/AOC ticket. You know, what they paid Kanye to do?

Cruz will be the same place Bush I was after Reagan. He basically ran on a promise of 'four more years of Reagan.' Not that he wanted to, but if he didn't, he'd lose The Gipper's endorsement. If Cruz ever want The Mesiah to wash HIS feet, he'll have to cast rose petals before his Orange Feets.
