NFL

Pats continue to struggle on offense. Gordon and Brown didn't work out and the lack of receivers is really hurting the passing game. I'm starting to think the Patriots can't get to every Super Bowl. The defense is really good, but unless something turns around like their defense did in the playoffs last year, the Patriots might not be in the AFC Championship game...

You'd need to go back to the first half of President Obama's first term to see an AFC Championship game without the Patriots!

Being a Steeler fan I wouldn't mind not seeing the Pats in the AFC Championship game. They almost beat the Texans because the Texans let down thinking they'd won. Never do that with the Pats and Brady. The Texans lucked out on the onside kick, 56 seconds is a long time.

Seahawks and Vikings put on a good show last night. I don't particularly care for the Seahawks but they were impressive.

The Seahawks have beat good teams.Care to place a wager on who winds the division, Seattle or SF?

Meanwhile in Dallas odds makers are taking bets on how much longer Jason Garrett will be head coach of the Cowboys.

Oh I wouldn’t be so bold to make a bet on it. It could go either way. I expect Seattle to beat the Rams today though.

The Pats are the meekest a 10-3 team I’ve ever seen, I think. I’m projecting sticking a fork in them. Will likely make playoffs, but could be one and done and no further than that.

Pats had a chance to win after it looked like they were done, and they had one of those dreaded quick whistles on a fumble recovery. That should be reffing 101, to hold off on the whistle if it's a potential fumble. They need to suspend or fire anyone who does that. It cost them a touchdown. They made a nice clutch punt block late, but then tried to repeat with no returner and it cost them. It's like they didn't trust Brady.

It looks very possible they could end up having to play KC then Baltimore in playoffs. Will have to earn it for once. :)

I'll note Marcus Peters saved today's game for the Ravens.

This will sound unbelievable, but the Patriots may be in the middle of another cheating scandal. Apparently a film crew from owner Robert Kraft's "Kraft Productions", not directly connected to the football operations (LOL) was caught filming defensive signals of the Cincinnati Bengals under the cover of doing a feature about a Patriots advance scout for a "Do Your Job" video series. When Bengals staff discovered them and confiscated everything, the crew allegedly asked to have the recordings deleted.

A few interesting things here:
  • The Patriots were instantly ready with statements denying that anyone in the football operation would see the videos.
  • People are asking, "Why the Bengals, who are 1-10?"; the logical response would be, "Maybe they've been doing it to every opponent."
  • "It's footage for a team show" is apparently one of the excuses they used the last time they were caught taping an opponent in violation of the rules.

If this really happened as described, and if the NFL doesn't try to bury it, there is no penalty too harsh for these people. Ban the coach, force the owner to sell, take away their first round pick for the next decade, void their championships. And they should be prosecuted for corporate espionage.

I have my popcorn ready.

There is a plausible excuse for what happened... but only if the video that the Bengals took indicates as such. If the video shows an endless recording of signal making, I'm not certain what would be an appropriate penalty other than the Pats receive some sort of playoff ban. If for no other reason than covertly recording the opposing sideline in the most uncovert way.

Suspending individuals (Belichick) becomes problematic, as the NFL needs to prove individual involvement.

One defense I've heard is this was against the Bengals, so why cheat. Of course, the Patriots spygate scandal happened because of recording the Jets. So that doesn't hold water. Perhaps a more believable defense is that the Patriots offense sucks, so they couldn't possibly be stealing defensive signals. :D

Ultimately, this comes down to the tape. What does it show?

A Cleveland Browns fan expresses his appreciation for his team's masterful play-calling just before halftime of the Ravens-Browns game, which allowed the Ravens to score 14 points in the last one minute, 50 seconds after being held scoreless for the first 28:10.

Patriots stumble into the playoffs. Could be one and done. Of course last year, the Patriots defense was leaking worse than a sieve with no metal screen... and ended up shutting down two teams for 4 quarters and the Chiefs for 2 quarters. So, it is best to not quite stick the fork in the Patriots yet, but being honest, I don't see an AFC Championship appearance this year... which will be a bit unusual for the AFC. Baltimore look great on both sides of the ball. The Chiefs seem to be getting on cue at the right time. Buffalo is my dark horse.

The NFC seems to have a ridiculous amount of good teams, in 3 divisions. Still think the Saints have an edge from last year, from a no-call so bad, the NFL had to change a rule!

Meanwhile, Freddie Kitchens was shown the door after a season of different results. A 6-10 record wasn't good. They should have finished around 8-8 and Kitchens' was the brain behind at least a couple of the losses. Not many options to choose from, they need improvements with the Offensive Coordinator and Head Coach. And goodness help up us if Cleveland drafts a new QB. They need to draft offensive linemen, maybe a corner back too! (Imagine Chubbs with a great offensive line!) No point scoring players... draft the work horses that make victories a thing.

Yeah, while I'd bet on the Pats to win next week, it would be quite a feat if Bill and Brady could pull off wins against both the Chiefs and Ravens. Their best hope is that somehow the Bills or Texans can stun the Ravens. I, of course, will be rooting against the Evil Empire :)
Sadly, I'm a Bears fan and there aren't going anywhere till the dump Trubisky, but I'll be rooting for Chiefs mainly b/c Andy Reid is a good dude and deserves a ring, even if that means getting to see 1 less game of Action Jackson.

I don’t think the Pats get past the Titans. They probably have the smartest defense in the league, but they’re not up to the challenge physically.

Pats are out. That should help some people feel happy. Well, most of America.

But they didn't go out like the Bills which was brutal.

Didn't know NE was playing Saturday, would have liked to have watched that. Did see some of their previous game and Brady did not look right. He's finally entered the Montana KC Chief stage of his career.

In honor of the Sea-GB game this week, here's a look back at their 2014 game.

Most of the game is a sloppy mess, in the rain, lots of interceptions, but the last 5 minutes are crazy. Lynch really was a beast, so hard to bring down. But there was no telling Pete Carroll that.

Meanwhile people in New England are discovering the month of January that exists outside of the NFL playoffs.

Okay, so Ravens are out. Umm... okay...

And the Texans defeated the Chiefs. I will not I stopped paying attention after the score was 21-0, but there is no way... why are you looking at me like that? You're kidding me!

Jebus... might as well tell me the NY Giants are in the NFC Championship somehow.
