Olympics off to a swell start

%So the IBA is giving the boxer from Italy a $50k prize for quitting after 46 seconds without injury against a boxer who'd lost 20% of her fights against other women. That certainly underscores how political and untrustworthy an organization the IBA is. Although, when you combine the Russian government and a boxing organization, there is near zero chance it wouldn't be corrupt. If she accepts their money it reinforces reasonable suspicions that this was a planned stunt, something that another pro and former Olympic boxer who sparred with Khelif has already accused Carini of.

Let's face it. The whole Olympics is a huge hit to climate. People flying in big smoky jets to get there, all the construction, fossil fuels, etc to build the facilities and housing. If we were truly serious about climate change, the world leaders would agree to just cancel this whole event for all times. We coul live without it.

Reminds me of a producer of organic wines bragging about how environmentally aware he was for going organic. Geez, if you really want to make a climate change impact in the wine business, shut it all down and plant big trees instead of grape vines.

The above is actually from European championships, not Olympics.

Wasn't the idea of the Olympics always woke and DEI?
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion

Equity means to guarantee fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all while striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups. Inclusion means that all individuals feel a sense of belonging and know they are valued.

Bad beds, bad food , no A/C, and E Coli in the river is hardly that...IMHO
But if all athletes are included in the bad beds, bad food etc. then equity is being achieved.
To the detriment of the games...

It must be possible to compare air travel statistics from Olympic years to non-Olympics years in order to test your hypothesis.

And also construction.

I would hazard a guess that the Olympics’ effect on the climate is not “huge”.

I always see it as exactly the opposite of woke/DEI. The athletes who are there, got there because they are the best of the best. Its a system based on merit and achievement. With DEI, race, gender, and sexual orientation are the primary factors in selection. Merit is secondary.
I see it differantly. A bunch of differant races and nationalities (diversity) come together on an equal playing field (equity) and all teams are welcome (inclusion).

Exactly. DEI is about people with the ability getting the opportunity, not about giving the opportunity to people despite the absence of ability.

The problem here is that owing to the current state of the world, people all over have ability, but the opportunities were reserved exclusively for those who had "the nod" (abilities be damned). DEI is about blinding ourselves to "the nod" and only paying attention to "the ability".

It only matters in sports that we care about. Water polo, equestrian, wall climbing, fencing... don't care.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen failed to deliver the gold medal he had confidently predicted...
Great bunch, the Norwegians, but you wouldn’t like them when they’re angry...
