First, not after WW2 but after revolution, and second, the place was not part of Ukraine before that, It was a part of Russia which was formally redistricted into Ukraine by communists. There were no native "ukrainians" there, only native russians.

Eastern Ukraine was given to Ukraine in 1918 by Vladimir Lenin.
So when current government shouts about getting rid of soviet legacy (and ironically they do) first thing they should do is to let Eastern Ukraine go.

You're probably right. The long game for Putin is to keep Trump in the White House because he knows Trump either won't, or is utterly incapable of crossing him in any meaningful way. I guess it depends on Putin's sense of humor though. If he does indeed have damaging information on Trump, then Putin could win the title of history's greatest troll. The LOLs would be truly epic. Russian artistes would be writing poems about it a century from now.
