Will Jim Jordan and his fellow House R's try to "rescue" Donald Trump and the Jan-6 insurrectionists?

House weaponization panel opens first hearing with a partisan bang | The Hill
Republicans formed the committee as a way to counter alleged abuse of a government they say is abusing its power to target conservatives. Democrats see the committee as the weapon itself, a vehicle for the GOP to forward conspiracy theories that will mobilize the Republican base ahead of 2024.
Its head, Jim Jordan:
“Over the course of our work in this committee, we expect to hear from government officials and experts like we have here today. We expect to hear from Americans who’ve been targeted by the government. We expect to hear from people in need. And we expect to hear from the FBI agents who have come forward as whistleblowers,” Jordan said Thursday.

“Protecting the Constitution shouldn’t be partisan,” he added.
Delegate Stacey Plaskett of the Virgin Islands:
“I’m deeply concerned about the use of this select subcommittee as a place to settle scores, showcase conspiracy theories and advance an extreme agenda that risks undermining Americans’ faith in our democracy,” Plaskett said at the outset of the hearing.

JJ was joined by Chuck Grassley R-NE, Rob Johnson R-WI.
The two, along with Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.), the top Democrat on the oversight committee who served as the party’s witness Tuesday, each took a page out of Jordan’s book, rattling off a list of examples of impropriety, whether by the government or allies of Trump.

“Weaponization is the right name for this federal subcommittee. Not because weaponization of the government is targeted. But because weaponization of government is its purpose,” Raskin said.

Trump to be indicted?

....
According to the forewoman of a special grand jury in Georgia that investigated former President Donald Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election's results, the jury has recommended charges against a number of people linked to Trump's effort, The New York Times reported.
....
Forewoman Emily Kohrs said that the list of names recommended for indictment is long. Kohrs declined to say names because the report is under seal.
When asked if Trump was on the list, Kohrs cryptically said, "You're not going to be shocked. It's not rocket science," adding "you won't be too surprised."

Seeing Orange Psycho indicted would mean I'd have to throw a party to celebrate the occasion. If we get a conviction I'm joining the ACLU.

Meanwhile, in yet another courtroom.....

And last month, the Manhattan district attorney's office began presenting evidence to a grand jury on whether Mr. Trump paid hush money to a porn star during his 2016 presidential campaign, laying the groundwork for potential criminal charges against the former president in the coming months."

This may have been reported on earlier, but here goes:
Trump campaign paid researchers to prove 2020 fraud but kept findings secret - The Washington Post - "An outside firm’s work was never released publicly after researchers uncovered no evidence that the election had been rigged for Joe Biden"
The campaign paid researchers from Berkeley Research Group, the people said, to study 2020 election results in six states, looking for fraud and irregularities to highlight in public and in the courts. Among the areas examined were voter machine malfunctions, instances of dead people voting and any evidence that could help Trump show he won, the people said. None of the findings were presented to the public or in court.

About a dozen people at the firm worked on the report, including econometricians, who use statistics to model and predict outcomes, the people said. The work was carried out in the final weeks of 2020, before the Jan. 6 riot of Trump supporters at the U.S. Capitol.

...
“They looked at everything: change of addresses, illegal immigrants, ballot harvesting, people voting twice, machines being tampered with, ballots that were sent to vacant addresses that were returned and voted,” said a person familiar with the work who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private research and meetings. “Literally anything you could think of. Voter turnout anomalies, date of birth anomalies, whether dead people voted. If there was anything under the sun that could be thought of, they looked at it.”
They did find some anomalies, but nothing large enough to make much of a difference.
The research also contradicted some of Trump’s more conspiratorial theories, such as his baseless allegations about rigged voting machines and large numbers of dead people voting.

WASHINGTON -
Former U.S. president Donald Trump can be sued by injured Capitol Police officers and Democratic lawmakers over the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, the Justice Department said Thursday in a federal court case testing Trump's legal vulnerability for his speech before the riot.

The Justice Department told a Washington federal appeals court in a legal filing that it should allow the lawsuits to move forward, rejecting Trump's argument that he is immune from the claims.

The department said it takes no position on the lawsuits' claims that the former president's words incited the attack on the Capitol. Nevertheless, Justice lawyers told the court that a president would not be protected by "absolute immunity" if his words were found to have been an "incitement of imminent private violence."

Trump plans our glorious future.

...
In a video set to be released on Friday, Trump will call for a “quantum leap” in the American standard of living.
Trump’s plan, shared in advance with POLITICO, calls for holding a contest to design and create up to ten new “Freedom Cities,” built from the ground up on federal land. It proposes an investment in the development of vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicles; the creation of “hives of industry” sparked by cutting off imports from China; and a population surge sparked by “baby bonuses” to encourage would-be-parents to get on with procreation.
