The Race For 2024

19% short of what they need to make it happen, even if they all wanted the same change.
???

You know it doesn't work like that, right?
You can't pass something that big if one in five of your own party's senators aren't on board, that math does not work.
All that is required is two thirds of the senate. Parties aren't listed in the requirements.
Have you... never seen a Senate vote?

Two thirds is only achieved when there are a substantial number of turncoats in the opposing party. There will be few or none when the advancing party doesn't even have all of its own Senators on board. Who wants to risk the censure of their party and the ire of their constituents by sticking their neck out for a bill that can't succeed anyway?

I hope you're right, and it will be trivially easy to affect a change that has been obviously and increasingly needed for more than a century now. But, to be frank, I don't think I'm the one displaying a bit of naivete here.

By that standard, even 100 percent support by the Dems would still not get the amendment passed. So the 1/5 speculation really didn't matter.

Trump has planned a press conference for Thursday afternoon to be held at his summer residence/golf resort in Bedminster, New Jersey, just one week after he held a similar event in Mar-a-Lago, which saw the former president tell tall tales of helicopter accidents with Wille Brown and crowd comparisons better than Martin Luther King, Jr.

It’s not clear what Trump intends to address specifically. However, it’s conceivable that seeing his lead in the polls against President Kamala Harris entirely disappear in the past few weeks, he is trying to shift the momentum back to his reelection campaign by speaking to the media directly.

The Harris campaign seized on the opportunity to make a mockery of the Trump affair in the ridiculous press release, which led with a headline that read “Donald Trump To Ramble Incoherently and Spread Dangerous Lies in Public but at Different Home.” It goes on to explain, “Donald J. Trump, the loser of the 2020 election by 7 million votes, will hold another public meltdown in Bedminster, New Jersey.”

There are other insults built into the aggressive campaign salvo, which you can read in full below:

Not so fresh off NABJ, Florida, and Twitter glitches, Donald Trump intends to deliver another self-obsessed rant full of his own personal grievances to distract from his toxic Project 2025 agenda, unpopular running mate, and increasing detachment from the reality of the voters who will decide this election.

These remarks will not be artificial intelligence, but they certainly will lack intelligence.

Banning abortion, raising costs on families, confusing basic facts, cutting Social Security and Medicare, blocking border security, and being publicly unstable, unfit, and unwell will not help his struggling campaign for president.

Tune in for the same old thing.

TODAY: Donald Trump To Ramble Incoherently and Spread Dangerous Lies in Public, but at Different Home

…And, as chillingly predicted, Trump rambled incoherently and spread dangerous lies.

Shocked, I went to go collapse on my fainting couch
…but JD Vance was raw-dogging it.

Donald Trump’s inner circle is working to clean up the “mess” the former president created after he reportedly instructed an aide to send a string of angry text messages to a megadonor in the heat of an angry moment.

The former president has apparently engaged in some “erratic behavior” recently, according to New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, in part due to the stress of the atypical presidential race.

That includes having his aide send texts to Miriam Adelson, the widow of casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson and eighth richest woman in the world, complaining that the super PAC she funds, which has poured millions of dollars into supporting Trump, was being run by RINOs – Republicans in name only.

“This caused a lot of concern that she was going to scale back her giving,” Haberman told CNN host Kaitlan Collins on Wednesday.

Haberman reported for The New York Times that Trump’s decision to rattle off angry messages at Adelson was partly encouraged by Ike Perlmutter, the former chairman of Marvel Entertainment and a Trump megadonor, who hoped Adelson would contribute to a super PAC he backs.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Isn't that against the law? You aren't allowed to coordinate with PACs. I'm sure there is some PAC to PAC to insider coordination, but this is Trump complaining through an immediate intermediary.

Also, I'm not really going to consider this relevant until ad buys get cancelled.

I heard this on the news. From his financial statement filed for presidential candidates he made around $300k from selling bibles.

Pandering to Christians.

The God Bless the U.S.A. Bible, also known as the Trump Bible, is an edition of the King James Version of the Christian Bible containing additional content specifically relating to the United States. The patriotic compilation was created by country music singer-songwriter Lee Greenwood and first published in 2021. It was later marketed by Donald Trump under his brand name and promoted as part of his 2024 presidential campaign.
History

In May 2021, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in New York, Greenwood published a "God Bless the U.S.A." edition of the Bible. It has the U.S. flag on its leather cover and includes the texts of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the chorus of Greenwood's song "God Bless the USA" in Greenwood's handwriting.[1][2] The text of the Bible was intended to be the New International Version,[3] but Zondervan, the division of HarperCollins that owns the rights to the New International Version, withheld them rather than associate Christianity with U.S. nationalism, and the King James Version was used, which is in the public domain in the United States.[4]

The book created further controversy in 2024 when former president Donald Trump promoted a new edition of it.[5] In March, Trump began promoting the book at a price point of $60. The website selling the Bible bills it as "the only Bible endorsed by" Trump and that his "name, likeness and image" are being used under paid license from one of Trump's organizations, CIC Ventures LLC.[6][7]

Hanibal Lector.
Ever wondered why tRump keep talking about him?
It is connected to immigration.
He is using it to support his claim that THEY are emptying mental hospitals and sending them to America.
Yes, it makes no sense but this tRump's brain.

Yes. I think his brain connected two different senses of "asylum".

Dangerous crazy people come from asylums.
Immigrants seek asylum.
Therefore immigrants are dangerous crazy people.

I'm not sure where to put the article I'm about to gift, but since it's about more than just Georgia, I'll put it in this thread. Please read the article. It has a lot of information about how some of the wealthy Republicans plan to interfere with the election.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/16/...e_code=1.DU4.EEyI.O6ur22f_L5lW&smid=url-share

Brad Raffensperger, Georgia’s Republican secretary of state, has been forced to spend half a million dollars defending himself in court for having stood up to former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The only way to spare himself from the defamation lawsuit he has been fighting, he and his lawyer say, would be to lie.

The lawsuit centers on a 2020 video that purported to show election fraud in Georgia. The video, which was presented to state lawmakers, showed security footage of election workers tabulating ballots in Atlanta. Multiple news media outlets and the secretary of state’s office have debunked the claims of election fraud made in the video presentation to legislators.

The plaintiff in the case, Jacki Pick, a Texas-based Republican podcast host who guided the lawmakers through the 30-minute presentation, sued Mr. Raffensperger for defamation over how he described the video in his book, “Integrity Counts.” He wrote that the video “had been deceptively sliced and edited.” Ms. Pick, who is married to the Texas multimillionaire and megadonor Doug Deason, claims she was defamed, even though Mr. Raffensperger’s book never mentioned her by name.
Mr. Raffensperger, who self-published his book, is paying legal expenses out of his own pocket. He has recently launched a legal-defense fund to help defray the costs.

The lawsuit against Mr. Raffensperger comes as state and local election officials across the country increasingly feel under fire. In the aftermath of the 2020 election and in the years since, election officials have been reporting death threats, infiltration attempts and voluminous requests for information from right-wing election activists, many of whom are motivated almost exclusively by falsehoods and lies that the 2020 election was stolen. A study by the Brennan Center in May found that one out of every three election officials reported experiencing threats or abuse.

Mr. Raffensperger fears that the lawsuit could be a harbinger of a new kind of harassment: wealthy activists burying election officials in costly litigation as a form of coercion.

I don't know how our SOS can support Trump or any of the current Republicans for that matter. This election is going to be a huge clusterfuck. I've never supported any Republicans but at least in the past they accepted the results of elections. That doesn't seem to be their plan, at least not in the near future.

Guess how much border crossing numbers plummeted after Biden put in a new policy

The number of migrants illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border has plummeted 40 percent since President Joe Biden clamped down on asylum earlier this month, administration officials said Wednesday.

Daily crossings have fallen below 2,400. That’s the lowest level since Jan. 17, 2021, right before the president took office. But encounters still remain too high for the president’s newly implemented restrictions to be lifted: Migrants will continue to be barred from seeking asylum in between ports of entry until average border crossings have fallen below 1,500 for seven consecutive days.

The White House used the drop to tout the president’s new policy and its results, while once again pointing the finger at Republicans and Donald Trump for derailing legislative efforts to address the overwhelmed border.

The announcement of the new border crossing numbers comes ahead of Thursday night’s presidential debate, where the two candidates are expected to spar on the issue of immigration, which ranks as a top concern for voters in the run-up to November

First clue came like, nine years ago?
REPUBLUCANS CANNOT WIN A FREE AND FAIR ELECTION
What did we expect them to do, but cheat?
This is a Trumpian attitude: "if I lose, they must have cheated".
Of course Republicans can and win free and fair elections. Trump won in 2016. He can win again. Doesn't look likely right now, but never underestimate the ability of Democrats to snatch defeat form the jaws of victory.

Much like the Trumpian attitude of "everyone who wants free healthcare is an evil Marxist".
