The Virus - Are You Affected?

A virus so lethal, you need to test for it to know if you have it.

That might be hard to understand if you believe that ignoring it will make it go away.

Ultimately it will go away when it runs out of suitable hosts to infect.
And at that point, 3 to 4.5 million Americans will have died from it and an unknown number are dead because of our health care capacity was long since overwhelmed. I mean, we aren't talking 1918 Pandemic bad... but making such an argument really puts the right-wing's All Lives Matter into the shit pile.

In Akron, there is a local Virtual Townhall about going to school in person in September. Seemed a bit odd.

Around here there was a zoom meeting for school board and personnel to discuss reopening schools. They cherry picked what questions they would take. The teacher’s union is pissed off to say the least. ‘Social distancing’ is impossible when you put 30 kids to a class.

With millions dead. The parallels between His Flatulence and Hitler grow stronger every day.

And you're assuming herd immunity is possible--we have several reports by now of people who are reinfected. If that's the case the only way this will be stopped is with masks.

Lol, utter tosh.

It’s basically an unusually bad flu season. Made worse by the reckless and needless deaths of those in care homes. It’s a scandal that gets brushed under the rug.

It hit pretty close to home this week.

A former co-worker of mine lost his wife of 47 years to the virus. I only met her once briefly, but for a few years I saw him every day. She was his everything. He'd retired not long after leaving the radio station, and had settled down to live out the rest of his life with her.

But hey...it's all a "hoax," right?

You seem to be forgetting the fact that half of all survivors have detectable cardiac damage in x-rays and 1 in 7 (maybe 1 in 3) have detectable brain damage in MRI scans. You know about that thing where some people who get the virus can't smell anymore? It's from neurological decay, not nasal tissue inflammation. And the brain damage is not limited to that. A lot of these survivors are more clumsy, more confused and more forgetful. Oh, and that lung damage that half of all infected get? That might be permanent too.

To reiterate, the flu doesn't give you heart and brain damage. This isn't just a bad flu.

You downplaying it all like you are some kind of COVID denier is ridiculously stupid, callous or both.

You're right. The current fatality rate for cases with an outcome isn't 1-2%, it's 7-8%.

So the number of dead Americans you should anticipate is 21 - 24 million.

Hmm... according to the CDC the worst flu season since 2010 was the 2017-18 season, with 61,000 deaths. Covid is more than double that so far, so sure, just like the flu...

Unusually bad, like in 1918? That's the only flu that compares.

And this leaves lasting (permanent?) damage to a lot of the survivors.

Speaking of the 1918 flu pandemic...well, let me quote the story:

The Global Sisters Report said the death of the 13 nuns in Livonia may be the worst loss of life to a community of religious women in the US since the 1918 influenza pandemic.

A convent in suburban Detroit lost 13 nuns - 12 in one month - to the virus. This one stands out for me because my great aunt was one of the Felician Sisters at this very convent. She died some time ago, but it's probably a good bet she knew some of these women who passed away due to the virus.

But hey...keep pretending this is just a bad case of the sniffles...

I wonder if the 90+ year old nuns contracted the virus at a bar ? A night club maybe ? Nail salon ? The beach ? Oh I know, the gym !! I guess we may never know for sure but this seems reason enough to shut down the economy for the likes of governor Newsom.

Just how deadly, infectious, and debilitating do you think a disease needs to be to justify shutting down the economy? Really, what is your threshold? Exactly how many millions of people must be sacrificed before you consider it justified to have lost a pocket full of dollars?

Millions of people are not being sacrificed. The vast, VAST majority of people recover just fine. How many millions (and it really is millions) of people are to be unemployed in order to save a handful of 90 year old nuns fella ?

Do what other nations do in keeping such people going. Whine all you want that it's "socialism", but it works.

TSwizzle, many of the people who survive the disease do so because of good medical treatment. Hospitals getting overloaded with patients will make the death toll MUCH higher.
