What liberals (still) get wrong about Trump's support

But then there's this. Where did the "abolish ICE" position originate and is it even anywhere near a popular opinion among non-conservatives?
Best I can tell with DSA, Democratic Socialists of America. At least it's popular at their protests.
I bet an overwhelming majority of liberals think that abolishing ICE is a stupid idea. But it that the way the media play it? No, a handful of liberals can advocate an extreme position and suddenly that reflecst all liberals.

I would say a majority, but not an overwhelming one. DSA is getting popular among the Dem base, as can be seen in the success of DSA in primarying establishment Dems. Just look at that Occasional Cortez woman. She not only unseated #4 House Democrat but is touring the country trying to replicate the same in other primaries.
‘You can beat the establishment’: Ocasio-Cortez crashes Democratic primaries

If Democrats fail to take the House, this may be why.

Why the hell can't we make that same standard stick for the right wing? Must be massive corporate funding behind the right wing propaganda machine.
Nah. The lefty fringe does pretty good job discrediting themselves.

Fear of communism is the same stupid shit psycho ignorant American's on the right have been wailing about for the past 70 years.

Nobody but the seriously lost believe it.

Which in the US includes a lot of people.

Marxism did a lot of damage in the 20th century and look what it is doing in Venezuela right now.
Venezuela's Inflation to Reach 1 Million Percent, IMF Forecasts

It's quite sad so many, especially Millennials, are getting seduced by this shit like it was 1918 and not 2018. Now we know how the movie ends. We do not need any more sequels and reboots.

Venezual's problems have nothing to do with Marx. Chavez was not a Marxist.

When Chavez died his hand-picked successor turned out to be a crook.

Marx caused no problems.

The US has caused a lot of problems this century.

A massive terrorist attack of Iraq. How is that country doing?

The empowerment of ISIS. How did that work out?

The root cause of a massive exodus of traumatized people which European countries are having to deal with.

Yet some psychos still are worried about Marx.

It was Leninism and Stalinism, not Marxism, that caused the problem in the 20th century. I’m not a Marxist but we shouldn’t confuse the two.

SLD

Yes. Lenin was your run-of-the-mill dictator and Stalin was a seriously disturbed dictator.

But they were dictators that talked about Marx.

Not followers of Marx.

Liberals and progressives are forever predicting Donald Trump’s political demise. After each purported outrage – Charlottesville, separating children from their immigrant parents, now Helsinki – they confidently contend that this latest event will finally force Trump’s supporters to abandon him. Yet not only does this not happen, Trump’s support has actually risen by 6% since late 2017. How do they keep getting it so wrong?

...

Evangelicals are a case in point. My work on Republican factions, contained in the book I co-authored with Professor Dante Scala, , found that very conservative voters who highly value social issues comprise about 25% of the party. These voters today are very afraid that liberal and progressive judges will slowly circumscribe their ability to practice their religion in their daily lives. They tended not to support Trump during the primaries, instead backing the Texas senator Ted Cruz. Their support for Trump now is highly transactional: so long as he nominates the judges they think will protect their beliefs and way of life, they will overlook virtually anything else he says or does.

This pretty much sums up my experience of evangelical right wingers on forums I come across- so long as he provides the SCOTUS nominations and packs courts with ill-equiped right wing judges they can forgive him anything.

Study after study show that despite what Trump voters say, their primary motivation for voting for him was racism (although sexism, homophobia, and xenophobia also played a role).

As long as Trump remains really racist, he has the complete loyalty of all but a few Republican voters. He's made it perfectly clear that even treason isn't enough to shake their support of him. Even after he groveled at Putin's feet and humiliated himself and the entire nation in front of the whole world, the Trumpstains remain completely loyal to him.

And if he gets impeached and convicted, no matter what crimes he is proved to be guilty of, they will start a civil war to prevent his removal from power.

America is now Russia's bitch, and they will kill to keep it that way.

How many members in the DSA party?

DSA is not the Democratic Party.

Ocasia-Cortez represents the people in a district that does not represent a majority of the non-right.

If she and the DSA are the undoing of Democrat success in the mid-terms it will be through a successful propaganda campaign to convince the non-right that DSA = Democrat.

Yeah, the DSA would like to pull the Democratic Party to the left. Just like the TeaParty took over the Republican Party and made it insane.

Chavez was a true believer. And he was not corrupt.

As happens so often in history however his successor was corrupt.

Sure the evangelicals will stick with Don the Con, along with much of the intertwined alt-reality crowd. However, that does not make majority votes in Congressional elections. So far the special elections are also indicating problems for the Repugs this November. Some details on poll numbers that matter:

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/fi...trump-s-support-has-gotten-deeper-not-n880851
In other words, Trump’s base loves him more than ever. But that base love isn’t translating to better midterm prospects for the GOP.

Two other important points from our poll: One, intensity is still on the Democrats’ side. Sixty-three percent of Democrats register as either a “9” or “10” on a 10-point scale of interest in the midterms, while just 47 percent of Republicans signal the same level of interest. And 42 percent of voters STRONGLY disapprove of Trump’s job, compared with 26 percent who STRONGLY approve.

And two, the NBC/WSJ numbers on Trump and congressional have been incredibly steady. Trump’s job rating has swayed from 38 percent to 44 percent during the course of his presidency – a range of just 6 points. And over the past year, the Dem lead in congressional preference has fluctuated between D+6 and D+11 – a range of 5 points.

The last sentence assumes that Trump has said or done anything evangelicals or his supporters would need to forgivew. Their "ability to practice their religion" is code for their ability to engage in hateful bigotry and treat people inhumanely if they are the wrong color, gender, sexual orientation, etc..
White evangelicals have no problem locking up brown children away from their parents. There is nothing for them to forgive Trump for. They support most of what he has said and done. Their only disagreement with him is that he doesn't rely enough on the scriptures when justifying his hateful bigotries.

If Obama had done any of those things - even if he nominated David Duke for SCOTUS and filled every Federal Bench with KKKers- they'd have a real hard time forgiving him for having had a divorce - let alone several of them, or an affair - let alone numerous ones - or paying off a porn star or setting up hush-money payments to his playmate mistress, or, or ,or...
Any one of those "unforgiveable" offenses would be enough to demand his ouster. Fucking hypocritical racist morons...

The policies didn't change when Chavez died. Either both were corrupt or neither was.

Actually, communism works quite well in practice--but only with voluntary, small groups.

Just look around, it's all about us. What's a good marriage? Communism!

But the fundagelicals at least have FFvC's clown cabinet that will do a bunch of scripture quoting in his behalf...

So how does this make liberals wrong about Trump's support?..... It STILL sounds like Trump's base are deplorable hypocritical bigots.

Because, as was pointed out earlier in this thread "protect[ing] their beliefs and way of life" means protecting their ability to discriminate against homosexuals and occasional minorities.

Oh, I get it. "Liberals" are wrong to predict that Trump's supporters have an ounce of self respect.

Essentially, yes.

In my fave right wing forum there's still a gay wedding cake thread raging. So far the baker is 'an artist' so shouldn't be forced to make his 'art' for anyone, plus they all sagely agree that the Christian cake maker is a second class citizen, beholden to the whims and wishes of others (by being forced to bake a cake against his will).
