More and more of this happens every day....

biracial family in Berkeley, California, was out for a walk on Memorial Day weekend when a white woman began following and harassing them, according to the Berkeley Side.

While out with his family, Essex Cook, 30, noticed a white woman walking behind the group. The woman has been identified as Lauren Milewski, 31.

Milewsk began following the family and told them they were taking up too much of the sidewalk. When they offered to let her past, she refused and began harassing them.

“You don’t belong here. Get out of Berkeley. Get out of here. You don’t belong anywhere,” Milewski told the family several times in the video.

Cook said that he is used to dealing with racial situations, but remained calm since his family was with him, including his 2-year-old son, and pregnant girlfriend.

Moments later the family noticed another white couple, who saw the entire situation, calling the police.

“When the police cars arrived, I was scared,” said his cousin, Elexia Cook. “I didn’t know what the white couple that stood there was going to say to the police, or what they said over the phone. We were scared that something else might have happened, and we would be arrested along with her until things got sorted out.”

Berkeley Police Lt. Peter Hong arrived at the scene and said that Milewski had a history of aggressive behavior. The video shows Milewski refusing arrest. No criminal charges were pressed.

I have little doubt that if the harasser had been non-white, there would have been charges for exactly the same incident.
I now leave it the the Resident Racist and apologist to tell us why this isn't racism.

Wait, she was resisting arrest and didn't get shot 42 times by the police? Did they all get fired for risking the lives of their fellow officers in such an unprofessional and egregious manner? One would hope so.

Not far from what I was thinking :p

She must not have been holding a cell phone.

Yeah, but by the time the cops see the cell phone it's too late. They're supposed to shoot even if she's empty handed. It's the only way to be sure.

So, I guess this is her?

I hope the angry internet mob on her ass doesn't harm her efforts to improve education and peacebuilding in Rwanda.
I’ve lost the ability to tell if right-wingers or professional devil advocates are trying to be funny or they actually tried to make a point. Just in case it was the later:

Berkley Center /= Berkley, California

But Lauren Milewski = Lauren Milewski, right?

"You don't belong anywhere" sounds like she was objecting to the inter-racial nature of the relationship. While it's unreasonable to say races shouldn't mix I don't see it as a racist position as it doesn't favor any race over another. While in general it is based on the notion of one of the races being inferior (which would be a racist position) it is not inherently so.

As for whether charges are pressed--in something like this the position of the victim makes a big difference. If they don't want to be involved in prosecuting then there won't be charges.

The actual racism I see here is yours--the assumption that charges would have been pressed if the harasser was non-white.

They look very dissimilar.

The lady looks drunk or on some drug or has some mental condition like bipolar. Be more selective to find real incidents of people being malicious and coherent. This is needlessly adding to racism fatigue and an appearance (not reality) of the boy who cried wolf about racism.

Sober was in one of the tweets.

Wrong.

A quick search of Facebook turns up nine exact matches for that name and several dozen close matches, and that's just the people who have their profiles publicly visible.

Heaven help us if someone called John Smith does something wrong - you will have to slander a huge number of un-involved and unrelated people

Fuck me pink but you're hilarious. You really are almost beyond parody. It's also actually a bit scary to imagine that you have been able to fool yourself into thinking that made any reasonable sense.

You know, Loren, I had a relative by marriage, long since deceased, who was actually a member of the Klan. I didn’t learn that he was a Klan member until some years after he died, but his behavior was entirely consistent with being in the Klan. He didn’t see himself as racist, either.

Yeah, I keyed on that, too.

Uh... Yeah, it's racism.
Even by your definition.
I have seen people of several different races promote the idea that their race should remain pure. But I've yet to see anyone trying to say that ALL races need to marry along exclusive racial lines. Like, the Asian purist doesn't care if blacks and whites intermarry. The white purist doesn't care if blacks and browns intermarry. And so on... So, they ARE promoting one race, theirs, over the outlanders.

Denying someone the ability to choose their partner based on their race is racism.

If the two races of the two people involved matters to someone, then it's goddamned racism.

The actual racism I see here is yours--the assumption that charges would have been pressed if the harasser was non-white.
Wow, that's hilarious.
No, it would be racism if they had said that the white harasser DESERVED to be charged, based on her being white.
Having the impression that the cops in some areas tend to treat perpetrators differently based on the perp's race is not racism. Even if it's only a media-formed impression, that's still the impression.

Let's make this simple - can you point to any real person who takes that position who is not a racist? I ask, because, as you point out, opposition to race mixing is usually a fundamental plank in the racist position. And it is reasonable to use that correlation as a good indicator.

Virginia's legal team from Loving v Virginia is on the line for you.

I think the better question would be: why are people reacting so vehemently to me asking if that is the woman?

I've stayed at the La Quinta down the hill on University several times for multiday stays to do a kayak race that ran from Muir Beach to Berkeley. I took the train up from SFO and then did everything on foot except the ride on the shuttle bus to the race start. That neighborhood struck me as the kind of place that would be misery for someone that is pissed off by racial mixing. Just the variety of restaurants and groceries on San Pablo a couple of blocks from the La Quinta should make them blow a gasket. Maybe that's the neighborhood down the hill by the La Quinta. But the train rides from SFO out to Berkeley and back seemed well mixed as well. It's like going to another planet compared to Florida.

I'll say too, there was no shortage of people whacked on booze or drugs causing nuisance disturbances and any given time of day. The craziest was a red faced women rolling slowly down the middle of the road in a wheel chair while shouting at the world. Here in Florida people would be losing their shit and running her over. Seemed like just another day in Berkeley by the way people were reacting.

Not really.
