Imputing unlikely beliefs is almost always a fail.

Fairness in sports is a matter of subjective judgement. But the determining factor is always money, not mathematical equivalences, the genetic composition of the performers, or gender bias or the lack thereof.
If a league prohibits asians or genetic males or whatever, and can capture the market, taking it away from the league that will take the best performers without regard to genetics, it will succeed, and so it will be. That’s why it has taken so long for women’s pro sports leagues to become financially viable, and truly profitable. Now, if they want to pull the rug out from under themselves by hiring drag queens or trans women, the “women’s” leagues will prob’ly lose in the long run.
Olympics are no different.

I’d call it simple irresponsible management rather than the outcome of some profound moral quagmire.

I certainly do. Most of the people who are railing against transgenders in general don't. The exact same people who mocked the US WNT soccer team for wanting equal treatment, from pay to training facilities.

Currently there are roughly as many unicorns in professional women's sports as there are transgenders.
