• Welcome to the Internet Infidels Discussion Board.

A sad casualty of DEI/Woke at Cambridge University

In the case of medical school admissions, I presume medical school personnel at each institution have a better idea of the qualities and characteristics that shape good physicians within the mission of the school than internet discussants who think only standardized test scores and GPAs count.
Should we conclude that the Klan has a better idea of what makes a good American than we do?
WTF???
The allegation is they are discriminating in admissions. To take their word for it that they are being honest doesn't make sense.

The Klan says blacks are inferior. Should we trust them about that? If not, why should we trust the schools with the same question?
The Klan board certified?

You took a statement that ld said grossly out of context. He suggested that admission boards are more familiar with the broader process of inspecting / reviewing applicants to their med school.

Your response was to say we can't trust the judgment of The Klan, therefore... ???

Are you guys talking about the Harvard admission process? Where they have systematically been cheating for years to boost black numbers?

Speaking of which. I just realised how incredibly not racist Star Wars fans are. In the first act of the first film the primary villians are "the Sand People". There's a few quite juicy and quotable lines from it. These racist memes, pretty much, write themselves. I still haven't seen anything.

Sometimes the absence of something can be as jarring as its presence

I'm not familiar with medical school admissions processes, at least not nearly as much as a lot of the people in here apparently are (that aren't employed by colleges). I see the stats, Asians have the best average grades. Asians also have the highest acceptance rate. #controversy!!!!

At Harvard, for the Class of 2029, 4% of applicants were accepted. Asians account for 41% of accepted students for the Class of 2029. Clearly, Asians are being discriminated against by Harvard.

OMG, there are zero White people! #reverseracism!!1

There was a discrimination court case about that. If Harvards application would be colour blind, and only based on merit 50% should be Asian. These was their own numbers. 0% students would be black.

If ‘merit’ were only comprised of GPA plus SAT/ACT scores, you’d perhaps have a point.

School admissions, be they for elite or just any university, medical school, law school, grad school, or other professional school, are not a race, with the top composite scores being allotted admissions.

#41% is discrimination!

Also, "merit"? You mean "scores", right? Because the word "merit" includes everything, including the extra stuff in school, outside of school, community service, jobs, etc...

When you accused me of threatening to sue you, you were making a false damaging groundless accusation against me with malice and reckless disregard for the truth. What a surprise.
Seriously? You were just casually happening to mention, no special reason, that someone, not you, could hypothetically, but not really, sue me for libel?
Have you considered taking an elementary logic class? What you just wrote is what's called a "False Dilemma Fallacy". There are more possibilities than just my threatening to sue you or my mentioning what I mentioned casually for no special reason. Of course I had a special reason.

My special reason was that first you committed libel against another poster and then you called him "regressive racist trash". If you're interested in regressive bigoted trash, here's how you can recognize it. My point in telling you about defamation law was to draw your attention to the fact that, however much trumping up false accusations against your outgroup is appreciated and encouraged in whichever narrow tribal echo chamber you learned human interaction in, in the wider society your subculture is embedded in, the sort of dishonesty you engaged in is generally considered so despicable that the rest of us use our legal system to suppress it. I am attempting to shame you into learning how to be a more civilized human being. Whenever you feel the urge to make a malicious claim of fact about another person, first put at least five seconds of thought into whether you have a reason to think what you are about to say is true. That is something good people do.

How DARE I interpret that as a threat? Is that seriously how you insist the situation should be interpreted?
How dare you?!? I know how you dare. You dare because you habitually fail to apply logic. I don't insist how you interpret the situation -- interpret it any way you please -- but if you interpret it in a way that defies reason and you jump from whatever idiotic interpretation you settle on to yet another of your incessant trumped-up false accusations, you will be making a false damaging groundless accusation with malice and reckless disregard for the truth, and that's apt to get pointed out.

You also appear to have accused him of being a Republican; that too is a false factual claim about him.
AH! So you get to "interpret" what I "appear to have meant". Inaccurately, I note.

Do tell. You wrote

'You see the people your "team" puts in place at the DOE? All white of course, because you are what you are'.

LP does not have a team that put any all-white set of people in place at the DOE. If you didn't mean the Republicans it's hard to imagine who else you could have meant -- enlighten us if you're of a mind to -- but it hardly matters. Nobody is at the DOE because Loren is what he is. Whichever team you were talking about isn't Loren's; your claim that it's his team is a trumped-up false accusation.

But if I outright state what you obviously meant, I'm a monster. The phantasm of the wicked left. A terrorist, really.
Being wicked is a choice.

Speaking of which, here's a lovely old lady having a go at academic gibberish. Enjoy

Ahh. Butler, the absolute priestess of gibberish that seems intentionally designed to make it completely incomprehensible. My take is that it's an effort to disguise the fact that she's saying either nothing of use to anyone at all... or she's saying something that's fucking obvious to everyone.

Conspiracy is too strong a word. I don't think this was deliberate, I think this was not looking a gift horse in the mouth.
Widespread exploitation and abuse can happen without there being any conspiracy at all. If there's a weakness or a loophole in a policy or approach... someone's going to find it and they're going to benefit from it. That benefit might be financial, but it might also be fame or status that is gained. Either way, as soon as someone has found it, others will follow suit.

This isn't a new concept. The road to hell is paved with good intentions has pretty much the same underlying acknowledgement - someone can start out with a good intent, but through lack of foresight or through accessible abuse, that intent can lead to extremely negative outcomes.

ETA: There's a saying out there that if young people aren't liberal then they lack hearts, and if old people aren't conservative they lack brains. It's way oversimplified, but it also captures a similar notion. In youth, we're all excited by the possibilities and eager to change the problems we see around us. As we get older, we see that some of the attempts to address those problems backfire spectacularly - sometimes in ways that seem like they should have been easily foreseeable if someone had simply slowed down and thought it through. When we reach "wisdom years", we generally tend to have learned from our own mistakes as well as the mistakes of others, and we're a lot more cautious about knocking down fences until we've tested to make sure we're not inadvertently letting the angry bull out of the field to trample people to death.

That isn't precise enough. Are you saying they had the capacity to run a super plagiarism checker upon his candidacy for hire and were just like, "Nah, he's Black. Let's not run it."
I doubt they run plagiarism tests on anyone that they're hiring who already has a degree and published works. I imagine they would simply assume that the school awarding the degree and the publications have done appropriate due diligence.

Ferinstance... I no longer put my college on my resume, because nobody cares anymore. I just list what my degree is in, and then focus on the aspects of my career history that are relevant. My first employer might have cared where I got my degree and what my GPA was, but I doubt my second cared much - they cared what I had actually done at my prior employer.

And you wonder why I get pissed off at you people! As I said, I am allergic to childish bullshit.
It's something you should at least be aware of as a possible consequence when you haphazardly toss around accusations that could materially affect someone's professional reputation.

There's a reason I don't tell you assholes (all of you, even the ones I like) much about my personal life or provide any identifying information.

You also appear to have accused him of being a Republican; that too is a false factual claim about him.

Jesus christ dude, get off your high horse and just own the fact that you're frequently an outright asshole who also has thin skin.

Reality skews left. Wikipedia skews left of reality. Lots of cherry-picking.
Who is responsible for right wing illiteracy?
Wikipedia is open to critique. Give it a rip.
No, it's not open to critique on sensitive issues.

Long ago I didn't realize the problem, saw a missing link on a sensitive issue, added it (zero words changed, just a link added behind some words.) No, they didn't want it to be easy to look, my change got reverted.
Or they simply disagreed.

Obviously I have no idea of what subject/entry you are referring to and it doesn’t really matter. I do know that years ago, it was extremely easy to make entries —one of my duds dud when they were in high school. Since then, I believe that Wiki has become much more stringent about what it accepts as additions and has purged a bunch of publicly sources stuff, including, I believe, my kid’s entry. So what happened with yours may have been part of that—just a more wholesale purging and not a reflection on yours per se.
Could be. But it might be interesting for you to read the edit discussions on a contentious topic. There's a lot more feelings involved than you might imagine.

Not to mention forcing the men to take sham testerone steroids to look more mascuilne. Our nation is at war and he's worried about aesthetics.
1) I don't agree with his proposal on this
2) It was purportedly not to make them "look masculine" but to increase aggression.

By all means, complain about the stupidity of it. Just complain about the right stupidity rather than the wrong stupidity.

Being wicked is a choice.
Good! If it is wicked to choose reason over self-interested folly, humanity over inhumanity, science over invention, inclusion over exclusion, I am wicked through and through and will continue to be so. Anyone who ever wants to tell any student, for any reason, that they do not deserve a quality education, they can go fuck themselves with the sharpest wooden stick they can find. If their reason for doing so is anything as phenomenologically stupid as not liking that student's skin color, the language they pray in, or the number of zeroes in their parent's bank account, or any other such arbitrary condition of birth? They have my invitation to add a rusty nail to the stake first. I am not embarrassed by my commitment to common decency. You should be embarrased by the company you keep and the ideas you consider worth defending.

And I'm certainly not going to sit here and pretend that anyone campaigning against "DEI hires" is ever either:

1. Not racist

or

2. Not associated with the regime of Donald John Trump, and his allies on the "Right" and the "Left", who have allowed him to legally seize power of an increasingly illegitimate state.

Because I refuse to pretend to be a fucking moron in the name of "politeness". These parasitic thieves and assholes infesting the White House have betrayed the Constitution, their country, their neighbors, and their God, and they should all be in jail.

Well... you don't consistently do those things. You don't choose reason over self-interest all the time, and in many cases your responses to various subjects display quite a bit of self-interest alongside an inability to consider a topic from someone else's perspective. You might say you choose humanity, but you routinely treat other posters inhumanely. You claim you value science, but you have several beliefs that are at pest psuedioscientific. You say you choose inclusion, but through your words and your arguments you demonstrate a strong willingness to exclude people who don't cleave to your personal belief systems.

Nobody has suggested such a thing. So I suppose you're threatening your imaginary friends.

Of course, the suggestion that someone should be subjected to physical harm for the gall of not sharing your views doesn't seem particularly humane or inclusive.

Again, nobody has suggested such a thing. And again, you prove yourself to be inhumane as well as cruel.

Sure, because those are the only possible explanations, and any other reasons that people have given are lies. Very humane, inclusive, and compassionate of you.
