GOP post mortem

I wonder how much of the vote was anti-Trump rather than pro-Democrat?
Doesn't matter in the short run.
True. That is why the democrats had better act wisely from now on.
Your system does not allow for disaffected voters to protest outside the duopoly.
You clearly know nothing about the US because ballot boxes are not the only place of protest.
If you want to change the pollies then the ballot box is the usual way.
If you only have 2 choices then you cannot escape the duopoly
You can vote for anyone you like, in red white and blue freedom loving America, the seat of modern democracy, leader of the world.
Even if they are not on the ballot? If the choices are only R or D then you are in the dupoly.
If you’re American, and you can get enough people to like what you like, you can get what you like.
The end result though, is you only have ONE choice.
The person who gets the most people to vote for them at the end of the process, wins. That’s “your” collective choice. Individuals don’t get choices in democracies, populations do.

The usual way to change the pollies is to change the candidates. That does not necessarily require the ballot box.

Nor are all elections binary choices.
How many of the recent elections were not binary i.e. not only R vs. D?
Those are the recent 2 most popular affiliations. There are almost always third party candidates and you can write in whoever you want.
Had a quick look but could not find any figures.
Look harder.
The point is that everyone can’t get whoever they want, to lead themself and everyone else.
Tough shit, that’s life, get over it.

Even if they are not on the ballot?
Yes. You can always write in your vote. For example, Lisa Murkowski won back her seat after losing in the Republican primary and not being the “official” Republican candidate on the ballot.

Multiple elections on this most recent voting day likely had candidates on the ballot from other parties. That was part of the whole hubbub in Alaska where an independent was on the ballot with the same first and last name as the Republican incumbent. I’m sure there were others though I too have not knowledge of what ballots other than my own looked like.

Certainly you can write in a name but your ballot will be discarded, I dare say.

🙄
Too many reds under my bed to see properly

Uh, nope. Your vote will be recorded like ALL others, and you’ll lose, just like all other candidates but ONE.

It is very good that you occasionally have other choices apart from the duopoly.

“Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski has made history by winning an election without being on the Alaska ballot: voters had to write her name in a blank space under the official Republican and Democratic candidates. The last write-in Senate winner was Strom Thurmond's in South Carolina's 1954 election.”

We ALWAYS have INFINITE choices. The fact the there are rarely more than two front runners who are relatively evenly favored, is a feature, not a bug. There is nothing more than collective preference driving that fact.

Um, her name was on the ballot along with an official Democrat's name and an official Republican's name (you know, your duopoly couple).

No. Murkowski was not on the ballot in that election. She had to be written in. See my post with the link to the PBs article or just look it up online.
