They have no choice. We sent 16,000 troops to conquer their island and bring it into our imperial holdings in 1898, and have wasted no dollar or muscle in trying to squelch any and all national independence movements ever since then. Roughly that same number of troops maintains that occupation to this day, "overseeing" the island and controlling our interests in the Caribbean from Fort Buchanan in the territorial capital of San Juan. It's honestly not all that clear why the US is so obsessed with keeping the territory, but your tax dollars pay for it and your soldiers are ready to lay down their lives to keep it. Blaming a conquered people for "choosing to live" under imperial domination is fucking absurd. I assume what you really mean is that you want PR citizens to stay on the island and never emigrate to the mainland, but that is no more reasonable. We claim their bodies and homes as our plenary property, and even so you want to deny them the most basic rights of the citizen, free transit within their own country? Fuck that.

I confess, I do not know anything about the Island of Puerto Rico's history and place in the USA. But to say I "want to deny them the most basic rights of the citizen, free transit within their own country" is just bonkers. I have said nothing of the sort.
But then you support an Insurrectionist and anti-immigrant felon running for POTUS who does with
"I'll take my chances with Trump".

Tom

Ignorance of history does not exempt you from responsibility for the statements you make about it. If you had an elementary education im the country, you were taught at least the bare outlines of this history. If you follow the news, and I know that in your own way you do, you've had ample opportunity to learn more about Puerto Rico's current determination questions on the many occasions it has been national news throughout your life. If you're actively trying not to learn that history, wondering aloud in a public forum is an odd way to do that.

It most certainly sounded as though you do not want Puerto Ricans to move to the mainland. Is that not your position? If not, what is your position?

Seems you have forgotten, I was not born in the USA and I went to school in Europe. So I think my ignorance on the subject of Puerto Rico should be expected. It's just something not covered in the curriculum.

It most certainly sounded as though you do not want Puerto Ricans to move to the mainland.

No it did not. This is you just making shit up again. Something you have a habit of doing.

:hysterical: Four days later and there is still much clutching of pearls over a silly joke!
Insulting an island is not a "silly joke" no matter how you try and rationalize it.

Relax, it was a silly joke. And if you listened to the crowd reaction, it fell flat. Something the pro Kamala press haven't reported.
Again your trying to tell me what to do.
“You’re”.
Silly girl.
Grammar police. :dogrun:
So disappointed.
I expected a defense, such as
The possessiveYour” is perfectly correct, as it was referring to HIS telling me what to do”.
If it's a possessive, it should be "HI'S".

Your welcome.

It does make me wonder why so many Porto Ricans choose to live in the USA.
Almost all of them do. That is, the ones in Puerto Rico and the ones in the other parts of the USA....
This reminds me of the time when Trump was in office, and said he had met with the President of the Virgin Islands to discuss hurricane recovery efforts there...

I knew you wouldn't be able to resist this! Too bad Rep. Johnson is only black -- if he were also a woman you would have hit the jackpot!
Because #1 rule of the Ilk is that no blacks or women must ever be criticized, right? Only white men are fair game. :rolleyesa:

You make Trump look stoic in comparison with that straw man whine.

One Republican as the butt of the joke versus millions of potential voters. Who took the bigger risk? I guess we will see.
I am not saying it was a smart move, or even a good joke. The one with rock-paper-scissors and Palestinians always throwing rock was better, albeit dated, as they have moved on to lobbing missiles instead of rocks since the First Intifada.
However, the likes of Elixir repeating the tired "couch joke" like it's the height of comedy is very distasteful to me. Especially since you all are so outraged about any sexual jokes directed at Kamala.
Edited to add: also, it was JD Vance himself who said we shouldn’t be offended at every little thing so I’m sure he’s ok with the couch joke. A little good-natured ribbing, or locker room talk perhaps?
Elixir is many things, but "good-natured" is not one of them.
And how would the Ilk react at "jokes" about what inanimate objects Kamala Harris might be fucking?

This wasn't just a rally. It was MSG, it was a main event.
Monosodium glutamate?
He was chosen because of his act. Calling Puerto Rico an island of floating garbage is a bigoted joke.
It was bigoted and not even a good joke. We agree there.
Take that in line with the mongrelization of immigrants by Trump and Vance, this is what you get when people say things like this.
I guess they did mongrelize, given that their spouses are immigrants. Do you have a problem with that? Are you advocating for racial purity, Strurmbannführer Higgins?
The couch thing, it was odd. It existed, it is gone.
Tell that to the Ilk on here, who are still hanging on it.
Trump is calling liberals the "enemy from within".
And left is calling Trump/MAGA that. Some on here have even advocated a violent uprising should Trump win.
There is a lot of incendiary rhetoric on both sides.

Here’s the equivalent joke comparison (not the couch one):

“i hear there’s a giant garbage dump up in the mountains. I think it’s called Appalachia.”
"Basket of deplorables" certainly came close.
And Biden calling Trump supporters "garbage" is right there.

And this isn’t even the best comparison because there were probably no Appalachians who were going to vote for Harris anyway, whereas there could be many Puerto Ricans inclined towards Trump.
Define "many"? Look at this map of 2020 results. While vast majority of Appalachian counties went for Trump, many of these counties were shaded lighter red, meaning significant vote for Biden as well. And even in the bright red shaded counties you had some Biden vote.

Speaking of racist jokes that denigrate an entire race of people, here we have Kamala and the Knucklehead making fun of white people:

Yet you live in the USA now, so have no excuse to not have known of the status of Puerto Rico and its people. I don't even live in the USA and yet I know about Puerto Rico's peoples' unusual status (US citizens but they can't vote in US federal elections).

Now of course, Americans are not exactly infamous for our geographical expertise. But last I looked Spain, the other belligerent party in that war, was in Europe.

In any case, I'm glad you now know where Puerto Rico is and who lives there.

Wasn't Elixir who accused Vance of being a couch fucker, FYI. 'Twas me.

Also, fuck white men in all of their holes. Please cry harder, Derec.

I think the couch joke is stupid too and Walz shouldn’t have repeated it. But I also think it pales in comparison to the PR garbage joke in offensiveness and impact.

Yes, that was stupid too and Harris already distanced herself from it, unlike Trump did with the PR “joke”.

Again, you keep trying to balance by kind and not by degree. These arguments are not compelling.
