Without enough respect for empathy, justice, truthfulness and fairness, no cop or god is going to make anyone a good person, or even force them to behave like one.

If one looks at the murder rate, and compares the number of murderers caught, to the number of unsolved murders, it's plain to see that those who murder are not deterred by threat of punishment, in this world or some other. In the US, it is almost certain for a murderer to be identified and brought to justice.

The percentage is so great, unsolved murder cases are presented as entertainment television shows. Even so, unsolved mystery shows are outnumbered by shows about murderers who got caught.

Fear of punishment has a negligible effect on the murder rate. Your assertion of the contrary is a simple attempt to establish a moral code based on authority other than mankind, when nothing of the sort actually exists.

Actually, the societies with the least amount of god-belief tend to have the least crime. Make of that what you will. But certainly, the countries in the world with the most fervently religious people are never the best places to live. Give me godless Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland etc over god-fearing Latin America, the Middle East, USA any day.

Oddly enough, there don't seem to be any. It's almost as if having strong religion in a country stopped it from becoming wealthy and successful. How can that be, if god is helping them? Surely the most devout countries should have the lowest rates of poverty and crime, and the most godless ones should have the highest. But we see the EXACT opposite trend - and at every level. The most devout nations, and the most devout sub-national entities (eg states, territories counties and cities) are the poorest and most crime-ridden, and the most prone to natural disasters like tornadoes. It's almost as if belief in gods made things worse, rather than better.

Or none of the above. People "behave" because Man is a social animal, and the survival of the species throughout the millenia depended upon interaction and cooperation. It's not that we behave because "god" is watching, it's that we've told ourselves that "god" watching is the reason we behave, when we couldn't see the biological reasons for behaving. You've got it completely backwards. Chimpanzees behave within their group, without any "god" telling them to, and those individuals who don't are shunned or kicked out, and don't get to propagate their genes. They, and we, "behave" because the group is more important than the individual.

Essentially, because bad behaviour is based on false beliefs, namely that we are coherent 'individuals' and hugely important, and that it might be okay to behave like shits if it produces pleasures for this imaginary being. Once we understand what the world is actually like, we stop behaving like babies and learn to help one another and create a much better world.

society doesn't function because of laws and fear of punishment, it functions because people are basically good.

also, you need to understand what society *is*. it's a form of inheritance, cultural evolution, and it's not unique to humans (Orcas are first non-humans whose evolution is driven by culture). this is part of dual inheritance theory. then there's the other end of the stick - social evolution, how societies evolve.
