The Marjorie Taylor Greene case

True! They weren't elected officials. Hmm, there might still be uncharted territory to explore in our political landscape. Given the current atmosphere in the House, where boisterous behavior seems to have become the norm, especially among some Republican members, there appears to be a tolerance for outspokenness. What we could really benefit from is a figure with the audacity and vocal presence of individuals like Jim Jordan and Greene, but who is armed with substantial, insightful contributions.

That would be great, for the fifteen minutes before they were censured and relieved of all committee assignments.

I'm refusing to read any further, as I believe that cutting you off here is mandated by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The first black woman elected to Congress, Shirley Chisholm, described herself as "unbought and unbossed", and some recent black Congresswomen have been rather combative, like Maxine Waters, and most recently, Cori Bush and Summer Lee.

Martin Luther King Jr. Never Said Famous Quote Criticizing Malcolm X | Smart News| Smithsonian Magazine - "One journalist’s archival discovery is changing historians’ understanding of the two civil rights leaders"
In 1965, journalist Alex Haley published an interview with Martin Luther King Jr.—the longest he ever gave—in Playboy magazine. The piece famously includes quotes from King that are critical of Malcolm X:

I totally disagree with many of his political and philosophical views—at least insofar as I understand where he now stands. … I have often wished that he would talk less of violence, because violence is not going to solve our problem. And in his litany of articulating the despair of the Negro without offering any positive, creative alternative, I feel that Malcolm has done himself and our people a great disservice. Fiery, demagogic oratory in the Black ghettos, urging Negroes to arm themselves and prepare to engage in violence, as he has done, can reap nothing but grief.

For decades, King’s comments have been repeated in history books and classrooms across the country. But now, new research suggests that Haley fabricated them.
AH assembled those comments from comments that MLK had made without referring to MX, like
The comment about “fiery, demagogic oratory” appears earlier in the interview and is not related to Malcolm X. King actually said, “Fiery, demagogic oratory in the Black ghettoes urging Negroes to arm themselves and prepare to engage in violence can achieve nothing but negative results.” The phrase “as he has done” does not appear.

...
Even before the news broke, scholars have been looking more critically at the relationship between the two leaders in recent years. Perhaps King and Malcoln X were “revolutionary sides of the same coin,” as Peniel Joseph, a historian specializing in the Black power movement, told NPR’s Terry Gross in 2020.

Now, Joseph tells the Washington Post that he’s glad Eig is “setting the historical record straight.”
That excursion aside, many right-wingers like to wave around "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Back to MTG.

When she showed up in NYC on April 4, Ben Collins on Twitter: "Marjorie Taylor Greene is completely drowned out by protesters and I’m pretty close to her. Nonstop whistles and drums and hecklers." / Twitter

AOC responded:

Ed Krassenstein on Twitter: "This really just happened! ..." / Twitter
This really just happened!
Marjorie Taylor Greene doesn't realized that Ukraine is in Europe.

Today, as you can see in the video below, MTG made the incredibly stupid statement saying that “I’ve never seen Putin actually show in any detail his plans to invade Europe. No one has shown me that. So I don’t believe the lies that I’m being told about this.”

She really is that stupid!
I wouldn't be too hard on her about that. What counts as "Europe" is a matter of definition. The boundary between Europe and Asia is rather arbitrary, and the two continents together form one landmass, Eurasia, a landmass that is often called a continent. Calling it a continent would make Europe and Asia subcontinents of it.

The Europe-Asia boundary is usually taken as Ural Mountains - Caspian Sea - Caucasus Mountains - Black Sea - Bosporus - Marmara Sea - Dardanelles - Aegean Sea

But Europe as a political entity is usually smaller, the European Union and European NATO countries with some small countries that are inside the EU-NATO ones: Switzerland, Serbia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

EU and NATO - European Union - Wikipedia

Europe, in this sense, has eastern boundary Finland - Estonia - Latvia - Lithuania - Poland - Slovakia - Hungary - Romania - Bulgaria - Turkey.

I think that MTG is a bit complacent, since there is a bit of Russia inside of Europe in the EU-NATO sense: the Kaliningrad Oblast. Russia might want to grab a little strip of land between Belarus and Kaliningrad, to make a land connection.

Russia might want to grab a little strip of land between Belarus and Kaliningrad, to make a land connection.
NATO are quite concerned about the strategic implications of this territory , known as the "Suwałki Gap", which is the sole land connection between Poland and the Baltic states that doesn't pass through Russian or other CSTO territory, and would be crucial to the defence of the Baltic states in the event of a war between NATO and CSTO.

It's sufficiently narrow that any land transportation in the gap would be within range of artillery in Byelorussia, or Kaliningrad Oblast, or both.

There she goes again.

Greene faces pushback after saying Weingarten is ‘not a mother’ | The Hill
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is facing pushback after suggesting American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten, who’s a stepmother, is “not a mother.”

After Weingarten told the congresswoman she is a “mother by marriage” at a hearing on Wednesday, Greene repeatedly claimed the union leader is “not a mother.”

“The problem is people like you need to admit that you’re just a political activist, not a teacher, not a mother and not a medical doctor,” Greene said.
MTG also said
“Let me tell you, I am a mother, and all three of my children were directly affected by the school closures by your recommendations, which is something that you really can’t understand,” Greene added.
This provoked a response.
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) stepped in with a point of order after Greene’s comments, calling them “unacceptable.”

“It’d be nice if we didn’t attack the witnesses, particularly making a decision about whether or not she’s a mother,” Garcia said.

“You are a mother,” he added to Weingarten. “Thank you for being a great parent.”

Frost calls out GOP silence on Greene’s ‘not a mother’ attack | The Hill
Frost said on Friday he was adopted by “two loving parents” and received “all the love and support a child could ever ask for.”

“Yet, I heard in this chamber a few days ago that someone’s saying my parents aren’t real parents. Let me be clear — I am their child. They are my parents. And for bigoted, closed-minded reasons, certain folks have decided that people who adopt their children are lesser than,” he said.

Frost said he has not seen any Republicans in the body “condemn these disgusting comments” and hopes they do not agree with them.

“And directly to the people who have opened up their hearts and homes for children ready for their embrace, don’t let anyone ever diminish who you are. You are real parents. A parent and nothing less,” he said.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia tried to use extreme weather events as a reason migrants should be kept from entering the US — despite having previously dismissed the climate crisis as a scam.

Speaking at a border security and enforcement hearing on Tuesday, the Republican argued that migrants should steer clear of the US given the prevalence of what she called "natural disasters."

"Natural disasters, talk about climate change," Greene said. "This is the fourth-largest country in the world. We have an extremely diverse climate. We have a wide range of natural disasters — 97 natural disasters occurred in 2021."

She added: "I don't think this is very safe for migrants here in America. We had 97. How many are they having in their country?"

Green, if she can be believed, admits to/ commits a crime on TV.

For some reason she was given access to a SCIF document. You know, the type you have to be in a secure room before you can look at it, with no electronics brought in. Well she says after leaving the room she wrote down as much as she could remember of it, and flashed her notes in a TV interview. Can she be charged with espionage too now? Please?

The assumption "Because I make the law, I cannot be punished if I break the law", was tested to destruction by King Charles, back in the 1630s and '40s. They had a big war about it, that culminated in his imprisonment; He escaped, started another war, lost again and was executed.

MTG might think that the office she holds exempts her from the laws that would see any lower ranking individual, who deliberately broadcast their unlawful notes regarding a TS:SCI document, severely punished; But as a fundamental principle of law, she is very much mistaken.

The most significant feature of a democracy, that sets it apart from an absolute monarchy (or any other form of dictatorship), is that in a democracy, nobody is above the law.

Did she break the law? Or did she just forget the details of what she saw? Or did she just flat out lie? What secret, if any, did she compromise? This is just more grandstanding by her. The press breathlessly reports everything this nutcase does, because people love to talk about her clownish antics. There are no witnesses to corroborate or contradict her. No prosecutor would go near something like this. We need AOC to step up and say something to outrage rightwing talking heads. Then the narrative would change.

Where's Randy Rainbow when we need him?

"Beebs Santorini and Greenes" would make a great musical.
