The Race For 2024

So Montana and Arizona pass abortion referendum and then elect the party that killed Roe v Wade and are in close proximity to ban abortion all together. Almost as if the average American voter (black women aside) are "fucking stupid" when it comes to politics.
They CAN'T ban abortion all together. SC's decision was that it's a state matter; the only way Reps could push for an abortion ban would be a constitutional amendment. And there's no way that will get ratified.
Pass a bill banning abortion nationwide in the House. The senate passes the same bill and sends it to Trump. He signs it. Abortion is now illegal nationwide.

Schoolhouse Rock FTW.
They can't just do a bill, to my understanding. Not now that SC has ruled that it's a states issue. They can't override that decision with just a bill. The only way to change it now is by amendment to the constitution. Reps don't have a super-majority in either the House or the Senate, and they can't even propose an amendment with less than that. And even if they somehow bribed a bunch of Dems to support such a proposal, there's no way they'll get the 3/4 state-level ratification needed.

I guess you should quote the part that holds that restriction. A nationwide ban was always the goal. The SC knew this. I'm pretty sure they left the ruling open enough to include that.

Why bother?
The current situation works for the people who have the resources to go to a state that better meets their needs.

It's the poor people who are not able to just go to California or Illinois or New York who will die in parking lots and such.
Suppose a relative of Trump or Abbott needed an abortion, for any reason. Do you think that they would be unable to get one?

Nah. The rules are different for the rich and connected.

Your understanding wrong. They can just do a bill. Couldn't before Roe v Wade. Can now.
Not now that SC has ruled that it's a states issue.
They didn't rule that.

Congress can pass the bill. There is no SCOTUS ruling that would be in conflict with it. Same thing with birth control.

My biggest surprise from the election overall?

Ruben Gallego (D) is up on Kari Lake (R), 50% to 47.9%, Kari Lake is down only about 2 pts on Gallego. Kari fucking Lake. This is important because the Senate breaks down to 52-48, that means three defecting seats can stop something from passing. But Gallego winning only by 2 pts, I bet they got to see a lot of anti-transgender ads in Arizona too.

If the democrats cheated to make Gallego beat Lake why wouldn’t they cheat to make Harris win? I’m confused.

Apologies if this sounds off, but don't Republicans often engage in projection? Could it be that the election was genuinely stolen this time?
I swore I wasn't going to visit the political forum anytime soon, but I did want to mention something and your post is related. My 78 year old neighbor swears to me that she has spoken to people at the Whitehouse, and the head of the Democratic Party, has written emails to Biden, Clinton, Cheney etc. and some of them have told her that there has been a lot of stuff going on, that ballots are still being challenged, that Musk and Putin have interfered in the elections and there are plans being carried out that are secret right now, but she's a fighter and she's going to try to save democracy for the rest of us.

Of course, she exaggerates greatly, and of course, I tried to tell her that other than Musk's little rigged million dollar give away, the lies on the right, and Putin's bomb scare threats and a few scattered other things, that there is no strong evidence that the election wasn't fair. Is she nuts, or is she on to something or both?

I have skimmed over most of this thread, but when I saw. your post, it made me wonder if some of what my neighbor is saying might have a bit of truth to it. I doubt it, but still, it didn't seem possible that almost every county in the country would turn redder, including most in the Northeast, due to TRump's hatefulness and harmful policies, like deporting hard working immigrants, placing huge tariffs on foreign goods etc. WTF is going on! I'm actually beginning to wonder. Meanwhile "I'm going to wash that man right our of my hair.";) That is assuming my neighbor doesn't try to convince me of her conspiracy theories, or are they? :unsure:o_O

Had the exit polls not coincided with the results, then we can discuss irregularities. Unless you are suggesting the exit polls and the election results were both fraudulent.

But seriously, the Exit Polls are the check and they generally match up with the results.

I had not checked the exit polls and I'm not agreeing with my neighbor. I just worry about her and I tried to convince her that she sounded like the Trump people when Trump lost and I hated to see her waste her time. She got mad at me, so I let her go on for awhile.

Still I did wonder if she really did speak to anyone in DC, and if so, did she understand what they were saying or was she hallucinating? Plus, she is hard of hearing.

I told her that Biden has already said there will be a peaceful transition, and there was no way to keep Trump out of the WH, but she kept arguing with me. Oh well. I guess there will always be some people who can't accept that our country has gone off the deep end and we will be having to deal with a deranged, incompetent, senile older man as our president with a Congress that will likely allow him to do great damage to the country. My hope is that once some of the cult members in Congress realize the extent of the harm they are doing, they might grow a pair and not do all of his bidding. One can only hope. Thanks for your reply. Gotta go remove the brain worm, 🪱 before he takes over my brain.

On election night I got a frantic call from my daughter asking if they can redo the election because millions of non-citizens are voting for Trump.

It totally floored me.

The election can't be redone. There is no Constitutional way to do it. Millions of non-citizens can't be voting for Trump. 1: they can't. 2: they wouldn't.

I didn't say so last night but I've told her before to stop getting her "news" from social media and at least read CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, BBC, AP or Reuters. Pick at least one of the ones listed.

About 5 million young folks who showed up for Biden last time just poofed into thin air this round. So it's either Biden had the magic that brought young voters out, Harris accidentally scared them off, or—I don't know—maybe the Democrats really did pull a heist in 2020? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think Harris scared them off.

Edit: And by 'scared them off,' I mean she convinced them things were so rosy and optimistic that they figured, 'Eh, we can sit this one out; everything will be fine.

Edit 2: Correction 5 million.

When she said? There were zero polls indicating an obvious blue wave.

It doesn’t add up. Kamala Harris practically mirrored Biden’s strategy to engage young voters, following almost the same playbook. I'm at a loss.

Honestly, I think everything will turn out just fine. I'm genuinely curious to see what the Republicans will do with all the power they now hold. This is going to be quite the show. If they mess things up, there won’t be anyone else to blame but themselves. And let’s be real, the House is as good as lost too.

My optimistic side says that they will fuck things up so fast by following their orange master, that it will quickly be obvious that they made a big mistake and then at least some of them will grow a pair and stand up to him, by not passing all the legislation he wants and/or by preventing him from carrying out some of his executive orders by legal means. I want to believe that some of them aren't as stupid as they appear. Of course, I could be wrong.

I have read that some undocumented immigrants in Dalton county, Georgia are happy Trump won. It's not that they voted for him, but they don't believe he will deport them because they aren't criminals and they are doing the jobs that no American will do. Have I got news for them! It will be impossible for him to deport all of them, but he will at least try. I've also read that undocumented immigrants pay about 100 billion in taxes per year and they also send back more than half of that to their families in mostly Mexico, so his plan would not only hurt us, it could put Mexico into a recession. Gotta go get him out of my brain for a bit.

This is why I believe and so do many others, that sexism had a lot to do with her loss, probably with a little dash of racism in the mix. Still even a white woman didn't beat Trump. This fucking country won't accept a female leader and the conservative Christians are the worst, not all of them, but most of them. One who I know was celebrating his win as part of God's plan. WTF! That is why I rarely go to FB, but my morbid curiosity got the best of me.

I just got off the phone with a Christian friend who is disgusted with her Christian Trump supporter friends. I told her that almost all of us atheists voted for Harris, and knowing the nicer parts of the gospel like I do, I don't understand how these Christians can support him. I told her if I were a Christian, I'd consider him the anti Christ and she agreed.
