2020 Election Results

Unbelieveable cheek. They got their guy in the spot, spent their money doing things their way, and completely sidelined the Progressives as much as they possibly could without outright disowning them. And then the far Left, despite this ill treatment, overwhelmingly voted for Biden. It's their so-called crossover votes from disaffected white Repulican housewives that somehow failed to appear. This egg is on their traitorous, cowardly faces. What a joke we have for a "Left" in this godforsaken country.
This needs to shouted from every rooftop and printed at every major news outlet.

Please translate that (what's bolded). Would you rather have Trump for the next 4 years, or Biden? There was no other choice except self-indulgent sententiousness.

Which is why the true left wing did, in fact, deliver this election to Biden single-handedly. While the Party leadership, on the other hand, was wasting enormous amounts of time and money flirting with supposed Republican turncoats that, it turned out, never existed. Support for Trump increased on the Right relative to the last election. The only reason he isn't still the Fuhrer is that progressives turned out the vote in a major way. And is the Party grateful? No, they're villainizing us. It's almost as though they secretly wanted to lose, just so they could blame it on those pesky demands for human rights they keep hearing from their base, and having accidentally won is throwing them off their game.

When they took that route four years ago we all got four years of Trump. Perhaps they learned their lesson...

Not the blue wave we expected, but might have been without Republicans closing polling stations, interfering with mail in voting, and just flat out lying. Cheating is all you've got when you're a tribalistic social dominance cult and have no conscience or principles.

The more I think about this, the more I think it really was a blue wave. Considering all the cheating and voter suppression by Republicans, who clearly are not bound by conscience or principles, a massive effort from the left is what it took. But this is only the first step in ridding our country of right wing authoritarian disease, and it's a no-brainer that things will likely get a lot uglier and more violent in the next few months and beyond.

Then why did the House lose seats!

Simple: Gerrymandering.

It sounds like they are saying that they are disappointed that the Dem voters didn't pull a 2016 and fail to vote for anyone that was less than perfectly aligned with each and every one of their personal agendas... just like they always used to do to ensure defeat.
Hillary was not the perfect representative for every single democrat, so the door opened for Trump. It sounds like they are disappointed that didn't happen again.. like with 5 million extra votes for that black musician with the name I always mispronounce... "Kaley", "Cayenne".. or whatever.
I guess that was rather surprising... it was for me, at least.

I get your point now. All I can say is that things are in a state of flux until we find out which party gets the Senate. As it is the House will have a tougher time getting bills passed. Also without Trump's influence Republican's might be easier to negotiate with. Biden seems very open to either wing of the Democratic party depending on how amenable the landscape becomes to compromise. But you're right that the moderates should NOT be pointing fingers. There's a movement happening that shouldn't be ignored. Speaking of which I haven't heard anything from Hillary (Quoth the Raven “Nevermore".).

And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted—nevermore!

And boring, tow-the-line candidates who can make a case for what they don't stand for pretty well (including much of their own party's supposed platform), but are terrible at explaining what they do stand for in a compelling way. It's great that they want to reach across the aisle, but if all they can say is "I agree with some Republican ideas, and think they should be given some consideration. Yes, most of my Party opposes those principles, but I'm in a purple district so I promise to undercut them some of the time while agreeing with them at other times", that's not actually as convincing as they think it is.

It's not that I don't think a bipartisan approach can work. Josh Harder of California is a good example of a popular and successful Democratic congressman in a traditionally firm Republican district. But he didn't build up that base by being a milquetoast, he was never unclear about his principles or embarrassed as to his party affiliation. Rather, he put forth a compelling vision for the future of the district/county and spent enough time actually talking to people that they believed what he said when he promised to represent them fairly and honestly. People respect the hell out of that, even his opponents. I note that when he first won his seat, he was going against an entrenched incumbent as crooked and dishonest as any Trumper. But rather than focusing on what he wasn't - attacks on Jeff Denham occurred, but seldom from his lips and not "playing hardball" in the way he could have - rather, he made sure people knew who he was. And he just won re-election playing by the same rules. Even though, as is supposedly political suicide, he does in fact openly advocate for universal healthcare. I like him a lot, and half wish I still lived in District 10 just so I could vote for him again.

What if simply each state’s EVs were proportional? What would the last few elections have looked like?

I ran these numbers a few months ago. It still favors the gop because the low population states in the midwest have more electors/voter than the more populous states. Depending on exactly how you take into account rounding errors, the 2016 election would have still likely been won by trump, but one of the scenarios was a tie, and the margin was much MUCH smaller.

More, they are pointing out the fact that this was a team effort and now everyone in the "moderate" camp is immediately turning to eat the progressive left anyway.

Part of me does feel like an abused spouse who, immediately after making nice the most recent time, are now getting their just deserts of another round of abuse from "moderates".

It's more the issue that we are used for our votes but then when it's actually time to legislate, it becomes another game of "wait your turn", which is really "we won't let you do anything until you are too corrupted, like us, to actually do it."

Don't see eating beyond AOC threatening to disrupt democrats because she doesn't get her way. Middle is doing cumbia. Bipartisanism is required with polarized legislature. Left will get more if it works within frame. Purity is for elites so they can carp.

As for dissident republicans I say let the flopping walrus expire and get on with governing.

Yes, because it's always the correct path to make nice with the folks that ass raped you for 12 years.

Bipartisanship is a fucking joke and you know it.

Of course I do. However its not possible to hold to esoteric values when country cow is being slaughtered because we don't want to play. Check history. Mensheviks lost. Stalin was result. Same result only to the right in Germany. Both of those enabled by greed and hatred by WWI victors.

Note the difference after WWII. Lend Lease, Marshall Plan, United Nations, NATO, democratic Germany, fall of communism.

This is why ideological purists from the left don't matter in the USA. They don't vote for anybody but other purists. That's very different from the ideological purists on the right. They'll vote more pragmatically. They'll vote for the Trumps and McConnells and Grahams, even if they have to hold their noses while doing so.

Leftists won't do that. And the results are clear. Trump is in office.

That's an absurd and insulting claim. We just did, overwhelmingly, vote for Biden. Even as he was on the airwaves deliberately trashing us and saying proto-fascist shit like "I am the Democratic Party" in open televised debate.

I note that Republicans also do not attack their own far right wing, even when they really, really should. They'll back Nazism rather than turn on their own. Democrats have no such loyalty.

Trump didn't win because leftists didn't vote for Clinton. By any reasonable measure, leftists voted for Clinton.

It's easy to blame a few thousand college students in places like Berkeley, NYU, and Reed college for voting third party, as if this actually mattered. It's a lot harder to grapple with the millions of people who voted for Obama twice and then voted for Trump.

Or reflect on the patronizing way in which Democrats just assume minorities will vote for them and figure out why Zapata county in Texas, a border town over 90% latino, flipped for Trump (the first time going for the Republican candidate in almost 100 years).

But yeah, those Green voters! Let's talk about them! Over brunch.

It's transparent, self-serving crap.

Biden - Trump margins: NV +2.7%, AZ +0.51%, PA +0.67% GA +0.21%, NC -1.4%

In IL-14 with >98% counted, Lauren Underwood (D) is at +0.28% over her opponent, and in CA-25, Katie Hill's old seat, with 94% counted, Mike Garcia (R) is at +0.13% relative to Christy Smith (D).

In better news, in CA-45, with >98% counted, Katie Porter (D) is at +6.8% over her opponent.

The Wall Street Journal on Twitter: "Germany’s Angela Merkel, Britain’s Boris Johnson, Canada’s Justin Trudeau and India’s Narendra Modi were among world leaders to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden. There were notable exceptions. https://t.co/3sOd6jJlHe" / Twitter
noting
World Leaders Ready Themselves for a Biden Presidency - WSJ - "Global leaders congratulated Joe Biden on his election win, as some allies of President Trump stayed silent"
The Wall Street Journal has a steep paywall, however.

Cowardly off air though.

So did black women (not all of whom are "far left") and various other sub-groups without whom Biden would have lost.
This is how change is made, Politesse. If the "far left" can make themselves an indispensable faction to the Dem party, the party will move left. The teabaggers "forced" the Republican party to abandon all pretense to morality and fairness and to embrace racism, lying, treachery, cheating and even treason to stay in power. In the same way, "far left" can, over time, force a migration toward to fairness, reason, a National conscience and equality of opportunity. But it needs to evince core values around which a sufficient minority form a solid united front. I am all for seeing the "far left" congeal into a cohesive voting bloc that becomes vital to winning, but I am not so naive as to think that it's already there.

That's simply not true. That mindless tribalism and support of the authority figure without question is a strong trait of right wing authoritarian follower mentality, the mentality that elected Trump and is prone to violence against opposition. People who don't blindly follow the tribe or worship its authority figures and who do strongly value holding power accountable are seldom attracted to right wing ideology or candidates.

Agreed. There are only 2 choices in the U.S. that have a realistic chance of winning.

Agreed, with emphasis on over time. If it's successful don't expect it to benefit you much, it will probably be to the benefit of your children or grandchildren, depending on your age & how long it takes. It's unlikely to occur in a term or two.
