Another Fucking Mass Shooting At US School

A name like Mauricio Garcia does not immediately sound like a "white" name.
Have not seen a picture of him so cannot see skin colour.
Why then is it it described as "white supremacist" thinking?
Seems like "I hate anyone" thinking.

Why do you yanks hate each other so much?

We don't hate each other any more than Australians hate each other.
If you compare deaths by shooting in US vs. deaths shooting in Australia then you hate each other more than we do. Not denying we have our fools and knaves but as a proportion of our population they are miniscule.
You can look it up:  Far-right politics in Australia. But I suspect you knew that. If you arm them better, I'm sure you'll find that they can be just as dangerous as hate-inspired Americans. It's all the guns, not the amount of hatred.
Yes indeed. And it will keep happening until something is done.
Facts ab9ut this moron shooter.

....
The man who shot multiple people at an Allen, Texas mall on Saturday, killing at least eight, served with the U.S. Army in 2008 and “was removed due to mental health concerns,” according to an FBI bulletin reviewed by Rolling Stone.

The FBI’s “review and triage of the subject’s social media accounts revealed hundreds of postings and images to include writings with racially or ethnically motivated violent extremist rhetoric, including neo-Nazi materials and material espousing the supremacy of the white race.”
....

How did this bastard get a small arsenal?

What is saddening upon reading the article is the comment that this is the 2nd deadly mass shooting in the US this year and it is not even June.

I think you meant to say that it was the 2nd deadly mass shooting in Texas in the past week.
In the first article this is the quote "It was the second deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. this year and the second in Texas in a little over a week."
We have been averaging more than one mass shooting per day in 2023. Right now, we are at roughly 200 for the year. But it's a lovely country, and you probably won't be killed if you care to visit. I haven't been shot yet, and I go out shopping a lot. Visit Texas. I wouldn't be surprised if you could rent a gun at the airport to carry around for self defense or whatever.
We (down under) all too often get only the sensationalised and deadly stories so it can give a very distorted view of what is happening over in Yankland. Nonetheless you have too many idiots who should not have access to guns.

Second deadliest - of 200

Whenever there are 2 or more mass shootings, one of them will be the 2nd deadliest.

Lest Derec scoff at the lack of a ballistics report to identify the weapon, here is a picture of it:
I never said that mass shooters never used AR15s. Btw, this guy also had a handgun on him. So he would be classified as "rifle and handgun" in the stats.

That kill ratio would require an expert with any other kind of weapon.
That's just not true. Mauricio Garcia killed 9 and wounded 7. Seung-Hui Cho (VT Tech) had a higher kill ratio and much higher total casualty number (32 killed, 17 wounded) with a couple of handguns. And he was anything but an expert marksman. Less so than Garcia, surely, who at least had some military training.

Cops should get Doctor pay, and Doctor (almost) training.
So "fund the police"?
And what do you think of the planned police and fire training facility in Atlanta? Because a lot of your fellow leftists are viscerally opposed to it.

There was a time when Italians were not considered white. And heard that Africans do not consider African~Americans to be black. Doesn‘t matter that this guy might be hispanic, he considered himself at least whiter than a list of people he hated.

MTG is trying to use this to fearmonger about illegal aliens, but includes a pic of the shooter’s body that shows what is supposed to be a neo-nazi symbol on his hand

I absolutely think that police need much more and much better training, in general. But unlike you, I do not think they need training in paramilitary tactics used to control occupied territories.

I think that police need much more training in de-escalation and conflict resolution. They need to learn to manage their own anxiety and how to use non-lethal, non-violent ways to handle ordinary situations, such as traffic stops.

The shooter was, apparently, another violence prone rightwing fanatic hopped up on neo-Nazi and white supremacist hatred.

Mauricio Garcia is a white supremacist?
Screenshot-2023-05-07-at-2.57.09-PM.png

Might as well be blaming it on Clayton Bigsby.

Meanwhile, clueless Governor Greg Abbott, who has been working tirelessly to make guns in Texas easily available to everyone, has identified "anger and violence" as the root cause of all the shootings.
Violence as root cause of violence? He must have been the president of the tautology club in high school.

He wants “to get guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals and to increase penalties for criminals who possess guns.” So we must rely on beefed up mental health services to solve the problem.
I agree with that. We should not glorify gun criminals as "princes". And Garcia was dismissed from military for mental health reasons - he never should have been able to have guns. Do we know how he acquired them?

I posted one upthread. Seems brown to me.

Because "white supremacism" is the boogieman du jour.

We Americans sure are a contentious bunch.

The person identified as the shooter has an Hispanic last name and has a history of working security and some firearm proficiency. The tattoo on his hand appears to be very similar to the symbol used by the city of Dallas. He apparently had a white patch on his chest bearing the letters RWDS: Right Wing Death Squad, according to this article: https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/crime/article275151316.html

He had multiple weapons and multiple rifle magazines.

Yes I did. There was not a picture of the shooter.
Generally speaking white supremacists are "white" skinned. If a person is "non-white" then it is puzzling to ascribe "white supremacist" motives to them. More likely they just hate everyone. There must be a term for that thinking but I cannot recall it.
No, your skin color is not what makes you a member of an ideological faction. Your ideology is what makes you a member of an ideological faction.

Doesn‘t matter that this guy might be hispanic, he considered himself at least whiter than a list of people he hated.
I am skeptical. There are photos of people he killed and they do not appear to be darker than him. Speaking of which, have the victims been identified at all?

I have noticed the trend to multiply these supposed "neo-nazi" symbols since it serves the purpose of inflating the problem for political purposes. Can you link to any discussion of this symbol as "neo-nazi" from before the shooting? Tony indicated above that it is a symbol used by the City of Dallas, and indeed it's a logo and over 50 years old.
city_of_dallas_logo_08112022

City of Dallas marks 50th anniversary of official logo

So not a "neo-nazi" symbol. Hate to disappoint.

The person in that photo has the same coloring as my son, my father and my grandmother. And me. No ancestry south of France in our history, according to the DNA test my son had done. In fact, the son with the same coloring as me has been mistaken for someone who is Hispanic when he's been in places like Arizona or Miami. He doesn't even speak more than a smattering of Spanish. Mine is probably better and mine is no bueno.

The RollingStone article is behind a paywall. I can't access it. But linked above is an article that says he had a RWDS patch on his chest. I

Did you know that there is a significant number of people in Mexico and Argentina and some other mostly Hispanic places who have natural blonde hair.

I absolutely think that police need much more and much better training, in general. But unlike you, I do not think they need training in paramilitary tactics used to control occupied territories.
Having a mockup of buildings for training is not "training in paramilitary tactics used to control occupied territories". It is very common in police training. Even a city as woke as Portland has a scenario village to train their police.
I think that police need much more training in de-escalation and conflict resolution. They need to learn to manage their own anxiety and how to use non-lethal, non-violent ways to handle ordinary situations, such as traffic stops.
Traffic stops can be extremely dangerous, even if they start out routine. This happened yesterday:
St. Croix County deputy fatally shot in line of duty ID'd as Kaitie Leising
And traffic stops for things like equipment violations can be used to run people for warrants. It was stupid for various cities to ban most traffic stops in the name of "equity".

Did you know that there is a significant number of people in Mexico and Argentina and some other mostly Hispanic places who have natural blonde hair.
Argentina has a lot of Germans, so that tracks.
That said, none of that applies to this guy. If AOC is considered a POC, then why not this guy? Are we in for the same nonsense you guys did with George Zimmerman where one of youse claimed he looked like former German football captain Michael Ballack?

There are blonde people from Mexico as well.

Being Hispanic does not mean that you cannot be a white supremacist. Look at Enrique Tarrio, recently convicted of sedition, along with a bunch of other serious offenses.

A superficial comparison of shooting deaths tells you nothing about which populations hate each other more. It does tell you something about the availability of guns and gun safety laws in the two countries. So it appears to me that you are just basing your claim on your personal stereotypes of Americans and Australians.

OK, but I was not responding to a claim about "the second deadliest mass shooting in the US this year." I was responding to your claim about "the second deadly mass shooting in the US this year". I was trying to make sense of it. Now I see that you simply made a typo. The more significant fact is that we have a mass shooting rate of over one per day in the US. What makes a mass shooting significant is not just how many dead bodies result from it. It is how much human suffering results, and that is a far more difficult thing to quantify. The numbers of people who die tend to depend more on chance circumstances, but gunshot wounds alone can also devastate and destroy lives.

We have been averaging more than one mass shooting per day in 2023. Right now, we are at roughly 200 for the year. But it's a lovely country, and you probably won't be killed if you care to visit. We (down under) all too often get only the sensationalised and deadly stories so it can give a very distorted view of what is happening over in Yankland. Nonetheless you have too many idiots who should not have access to guns.

We do, but that is a side effect of making guns easily available to the entire population, which happens to include enough idiots to produce all the mayhem. If you want to believe that Australians would behave more rationally if they also had as much access to guns, go ahead, but I doubt you have any solid reason to believe that. I happen to like the Australians that I've met, but I don't think that they are better or worse than Americans when it comes to prejudices. It only takes a few loonies with guns to make sensational news stories. Don't forget that the US is far more populous than Australia, so we tend to generate a lot more sensational stories when things go awry.

And there are plenty of people in predominantly Spanish-speaking countries for whom "right wing death squad" is not just a patch they wear or a tattoo. The US has had a really bad habit of supporting right wing death squads across Latin America.
