Trumpists Are Suffering the Free Market Consequences Of Being Deplorable

What if doctors behaved like this?

The surgeon called in to do emergency surgery to stop the bleeding.

Sorry, won't do it for a Trump supporter.

Trump has taken things into the gutter. He has taken many with him.

You can join them or be better than them.

As the current situation stands, a surgeon can decline to operate on anyone, and claim it's a matter of conscience. It's easy to advise people to be big about something, but now we have consciences to worry about.

These Cult 45 members are not being judged on the color of their skin. They are being judged on the content of their character.

I've been thinking about this thread for a few days now, analyzing it, considering and reconsidering. What is it we're talking about that some are perceiving as wrong here? Is it the maligning of people in the public sphere? Is that it?

I've been holding off on commenting, too. I wanted to give a considered response, not just my immediate reaction. I agree with what you wrote but wanted to expand on it a bit.

I oppose efforts to give a pass to bigotry and unfairness in the public sphere. Whatever an individual might feel about same sex marriage or interracial dating or other religions is their own private affiar. But when it comes to public accommodations and especially when it comes to government officials performing their official duties, discrimination based on religion or racism or 'values' shouldn't be allowed. That sort of picking and choosing between citizens destroys social harmony. It makes a mockery of the claim we have equal rights or that there's justice for all.

There's ~325 million of us here in the US and we all need to get along if we want our society to function. Letting bigotry and discrimination to once again become part of our daily lives is utterly foolish.

With that said, I don't actually mind seeing Sarah Huckabee Sanders hoist with the Huckabee family petard. There's only one person more deserving, and that's her father.

I have no illusions about SHS suddenly changing her tune about 'values' based discrimination. I think she's known all along what she was doing. I think she and her father will continue to support anti-gay businessmen and county clerks while crying about how unfair it is when they're on the receiving end of the same discriminatory practices. But I think a few Republican voters might be having second thoughts about 'values' based bigotry now that they know it could affect them personally.

I already said my peace about why Sanders deserved this and why she should not be protected as well as why the restaurant owner was right to do it.

I'd like to add that what the owner did was valuable to the American people. She gave us this splendid example of an ordinary citizen speaking truth to power and holding it accountable in a small way.

Like the lady on the bus that was boarded by ICE while nowhere near 100 miles of an international border. She stood up and said loudly that this was illegal and that no one on that bus needed to show them shit or answer any of their questions. They backed down.

We really need these kinds of incidents as examples of what ordinary citizens can do to hold power accountable and stand up to unjust actions. I hope to see more of this. These are examples of regular people NOT staying silent in the face of creeping authoritarianism.

Yes. Huckabee later tweeted again about the incident.

Bigotry. On the menu at Red Hen Restaurant in Lexington VA. Or you can ask for the “Hate Plate”. And appetizers are “small plates for small minds” https://t.co/rHEVdcQwwh

This is the man that stood there, using Kim Davis as a "godly" prop when she wouldn't LAWFULLY marry two men. He supported her and used her as a lightning rod. His hypocrisy here is simply breath taking.

Yes, republicans are being incredibly hypocritical here. However, sad that democrats are stooping to Trump's level. We're following Trump into the gutter...

Ya, it's a problem. On the one hand, you want to have people face the consequences of their actions. On the other hand, you don't want to have Trump set the level of debate in the US and he will win when the tone of the political conversation is down where he and his supporters are more comfortable than the opposition.

I don't know if we are getting into the gutter.

What is legitimate resistance saying "This is enough!" and what is partisan fuckery? Elected officials shouldn't encourage a partisan rubber stamp test, but is it the gutter for someone to have had enough? How much longer can liberals look at the country descend into madness and while up above say, 'well, we didn't stoop to their level'.

The country is descending into madness because the left doesn't vote at the same frequency as the right. It's as simple as that. And studies have shown over and over, that the more negative a campaign, depresses voter turn out.

Yes and no. In 2010, the Republicans won huge, then gerrymandered the House of Representatives, making it very hard to win the House back. 2018 will be about who shows up (though, I suppose every election is like that). There is a substantial anger at the Trump Admin, much like seen with Obama by alt-righters / Republicans, but you know, for actual reasons.
It's as simple as that. And studies have shown over and over, that the more negative a campaign, depresses voter turn out.
Yet the vote in some states increased for both candidates verses 2012, such as Florida. In Wisconsin, the vote dropped for both candidates.

Are you aware that we don't actually live in a fascist state?

How can you tell?
What non-fascist state kidnaps refugee children from their parents, sequesters them away in the middle of the night in secret "dark sites" that the public and high government officials - even Senators - are not allowed to see? This is just a practice round for how to "disappear" people en masse.
What non-fascist government leaders can you name who advocate for doing away with due process?

I could build a very long list, but why bother when all I'd get back is, at best, a VERY SHORT list?
The point is that the US is currently a nascent fascist state, and unless the current regime is unseated in a hurry, you'll soon be chanting "NOT A FASCIST STATE" in unison with hundreds of thousands of other conscriptees, goose-stepping under a big banner with a fat orange face on it.

I often wonder if the stolen Supreme Court seat won't be viewed as the tipping point...

At this point, if we don't have a vast majority of strong willed people of conscience and humane values in the Justice system and Congress, we are fucked. We may truly be boiling frogs.

Every presidential administration is committing horrible crimes.

Obama had his murderous drone program.

Should we kick Obama out of restaurants too?

My heart bleeds for Anwar al-Alwaki and his ilk.

Good article by David Atkins in Washington Monthly. It's short.

The real situation is the reverse: conservatives want the social and economic benefits that come from ecumenical urbanism, but they want to retain the deep bigotries and social privileges that come from provincialism. They want the right to enact zoning and social policies that discriminate against protected class minorities in their own communities, but they want not to suffer the cultural consequences of those views in liberal cities.

I think the article is pretty spot on, but I'm pretty sure Trump supporters will merely play this into their victim-hood scenario, whether religious or "reverse racism".

Like David Atkins said, and very correctly, "This is how freedom works."

I'm glad to live in a nation where restaurant owners have the freedom refuse service to high-ranking political officials.

ETA: this is not to say I approve of the current administration. Don't like it, didn't vote for Trump, and will be as glad as anyone when he's out.
