What Are You Eating Today?

I've eaten there, but it has certainly been a while. I once met a British colleague at the McDonald's in Christchurch NZ after a conference. I went along with it, but thought it odd enough to inquire as to WHY we were lunching at a Macca's of all places. He gets this impish grin on his face and says "Well we wanted you to feel at home, didn't we?"

Oh, right, the topic. I'm eating pretty well today, as the Asian market near my place has been filling up with the spring bounty. I was simmering some lotus root in broth yesterday afternoon, they became part of an oniony soup for dinner yesterday, and a very garlicky stir fry for today's lunch. Picked up a precooked eel for dinner, the plan is to do a vaguely Japanese style unagi don with it.

My lateshifts are two weeks out of every six, and I have a particular lateshift eating pattern to avoid being hungry at work.

Lates are typically 3pm-midnight (though the exact times vary quite a bit), with a mealbreak at around 7-8pm. I don't like to eat much at that time of day, so I generally have just one big meal before I start work (I try to stay in bed most of the morning).

My 'big meal' is a large bowl of brown rice (250g) and tuna (370g), with a sauce made up of yoghurt (three tablespoons) and sour cream (half a tablespoon) with a teaspoon of hot English mustard mixed through it.

That is often the only food I eat all day on lates, but if I am hungry when I get home I have a bowl of breakfast cereal or some toast and vegemite before bed.

I eat real food the other four weeks out of six, when I am working sane hours (typically 6am-3pm, with lunch around 10:30am).

Shiftwork sucks, but the pay's good.

My dietitian wants me to eat more protein. I’ve never been a big breakfast person but I’m trialling eating a low carb, high protein bread for breakfast with Vegemite or scrambled eggs, and a bowl of protein enhanced granola with dried fruit and milk. Lunch is becoming some meat in a protein enhanced wrap with cucumber, tomato, capsicum and lettuce, with some hummus or similar as ‘butter’. Dinner will be whatever I make, though while Bilby is on lates this could be a frozen dinner or just a snack.

I have been doing something right though, I’ve lost 15kg in 15 months. It’s been a slow and steady weight loss.

Protein is why one of my regular breakfasts is eggs with rice and beans.

Eggs are a complete protein, and the rice beans combo are a complete protein. Milk and cheese.

Rice and most bans are a good protein combo. Rice and lentils arr good, rice and green peas.

Plenty of info on complete proteins and food combos on the net.

Some foods like bread can have all essential proteins, but not all in sufficient quantity.
Canned tuna and salmon. Fish, chicken. Whole grain bread and peanut butter are a good combo.

Cashews, peanuts.

Find your daily protein requirement. Then set up a spreadsheet to add up protein for what you eat.

Leaned something new.

Vegemite is a dark brown, salty, and savory Australian food spread made from leftover brewer's yeast extract, with vegetable and spice additives, and is a rich source of B vitamins. It's an iconic national food, typically eaten in small amounts, lightly spread on buttered toast or crackers, and has a strong, umami flavor that is an acquired taste.

Too0 much unison for me.

Here's an image for you.

In his book The Naked Island, Russell Braddon (good author BTW) describes a man very swollen with beriberi. He dickers for a small jar of Vegemite and turns into a small fountain for an extended time.

My best friend was prescribed half teaspoon of Vegemite when she was running low on nutrition.

It should be classed as a superfood!

FFS you don’t need it on toast, it’s a great meat tenderiser and additive to stews!

Last night I cooked two salmon (Atlantic) fillets. Pan seared on medium heat for three minutes on one side, then two on the other side, then a third minute after applying a sauce consisting of honey, soy sauce, vinegar and crushed garlic. I was surprised at how well it turned out, and most importantly, Mrs. Tharmas agreed.

As a kid, I was given a choice and I always chose the fish.
We have a McD in our little town. I used to go for an occasional McFish (the burgers are too disgusting) but something changed. The last time I did that, not only was the price almost double (they had begun charging for lettuce, and for tomato, and for tartar sauce and …) but the fish itself was mushy and didn’t smell right. Plus, the teenage robot on order-taking duty kept mumbling into the mic something incomprehensible about “using the app” until I yelled at him “I just want a fish sandwich!” Then they charged me for all the extras and gave me a patty on bread with none of those extras.

Haven’t been able to drag myself back there. Fuck that place. Now that I know there’s a great Taco truck less than 500 yards away from it, I may never go back.

I you look at it as pric3 per pound of the food 'fast food' has never really been cheap.

The original Whopper was a thin burger and a large air fluffed cheap bun.

Here in Seattle one problem for fast food is a min wage way above the federal level. People pouring coffee or flipping burgers demand a min living wage. No argument form me, but consumers pay for it. And the price of beef.

Don't remember when I was in a fast food or coffee place.

I buy cans of Folgers coffee for about $16-$20 depending on where. A Starbucks 20oz drip is over $3. The can lasts about 6 weeks. Two Starbucks a day is around $180 a month.

For $15 at MD I can buy a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, and deli meat for a week of lunch.

From reporting people are spending less on fast food and the franchises are in trouble Starbucks has been closing stores.

Hubby went with me to get groceries this week and was shocked at the bill. I understand the feeling. I’m shocked every time I go! I’m planning on growing more than tomatoes and herbs this year in my garden patch. Some beans and peas. We’ll see how I manage that we’re dog sitting son’s uber rambunctious large puppy for one thing. For the other: I’m old! Stuff takes me much longer than it used to do. Also I just remembered I should start some lettuces as hubby doesn’t seem interested in doing that himself this year. He did last year, and a jalapeños which I thought was good for a city boy who disliked gardening. His first foray into gardening.

We had a long, cold winter and I lost a couple of rose bushes. Lost lots of canes on the others, but they needed thinning out anyway. My tarragon made it over the winter! I have more garlic chives than anyone would ever use. Our new Northstar cherry made it through the winter. It’s still small but it will give us enough to make at least one and maybe two good pies. We lost our original a few years ago and man did that tree produce! Perfect cherries for pie or ice cream topping. Tart but not too tart, juicy. Perfect with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I usually get the McChicken on the rare occasion I go to a McDonalds. The fish sandwich is way overpriced.

In about 2010 my kids decided that getting McD's made them feel sick afterwards. Haven't been there since. Sometimes I think that I'd like a Big Mac but then I remember that I usually feel woozy after so I forget it.

Wendy's is much better and much cheaper than Mickey Dees. When I go to Wendy's, I can get a small burger, 4 chicken tenders, fries and a drink for 8 bucks. Not the healthiest food, but tasty and cheap when we feel like doing a quick, cheap lunch. Plus the honey mustard sauce for the chicken is very tasty and the burger actually tastes like good, lean beef. No extra charge for the lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles.

But, today, we had lunch at Long Horn so we could see our favorite waitress. She gave us the family discount. I ate half of a burger and a sweet potato. The dogs will get the rest of the burger as treats over the next day or two. Our meal was less than 20 bucks, so we gave her a generous tip. The family was supposed to join us but my son texted me around 9 to tell me he was sick. I later told my dil that she and the kids could have joined us and she said that she thought about that too, but it was too late. Oh well. We will only be here for one more week so I hope we get to see them at least one more time.

For dinner, we went to a Mediterranean restaurant, where I had the crispy falafel bowl. It was filled with rice, hummus, veggies and falafels with a slice of crispy pita bread. Of course, I had to take half of it home. While we are in Indy, we've been eating out lunch and dinner every day, with lots of ethnic foods, but we must visit our favorite server once a week. She's an Indian immigrant and we've told her she is welcome to visit us in Georgia, along with her husband if they would like a vacation with a free room and private bathroom.

I think Wendy's has the best burger in the fast food industry.

One of my wife's friend's nephew is the manager of a local bar and grill that has the reputation for having the best burgers around so he always gives us a discount when we go there. I usually take half home too.

I do not have any stomach problems, but if I ate a Big Mac or Whopper today it would probably make me feel like crap for a day or two.

There was a commercial where a thin 20 something guy was holding a huge burger up to his open mouth with a big smile. I wondered how that would fit into his stomach.

Once in a while I'll cook a package of ground bee and put it in the refrigerator My burger is a grilled cheese sandwich with ground beef. Or just a cold ground beef sandwich. Not as good as leftover seasoned meatloaf, but good. When I cook it I season the ground beef with garlic powder and chili powder.

Ground beef and rice with tomato saucer. When I was a kid I lived with an aunt and uncle a few ties. An Italian uncle who liked to cook. Left over meatballs and spaghetti for a few days. Meatball sandwiches. Making the meatballs took a few hours.

Me, my 2 sisters, and 4 cousins. I feel sorry for kids who grow up without the leftovers experience' Always something good to eat in refrigerator.

I make some pasta and heat up tomato sauce with the ground beef. Cook peppers and other vegetables with the pasta. Celery is good. I make more than I need and it goes in the refrigerator.

Apparently you can chop the chives, mix with olive oil and freeze them so you have them all year round.
